happy readers and Happy Memorial Day. I
hope you all have a good and safe day no matter what your plans are as this is
a day many use for fun and parties it is a rather sad holiday for others. That said I’m working but have made lots of
goodies for my crew. I also had a busy
weekend with a birthday party and a double feature of X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice Through the Looking
Glass. That said since I mentioned last
movie review that I want to do a few more of these here and there I thought
this would be a great one to do. First
though don’t forget to check out my giveaway open until 6/6 for a SIGNED copy
of The Last Star by Rick Yancey here.
Now onto the movies.

Okay
so know as I discuss this I love these types of movies for sure but I’ve never
read any of the source material so I have no idea if it’s “faithful” or not
this is purely based on my enjoyment in watching the story develop. I have really enjoyed the newest X-Men movies,
I enjoyed the originals but this new set of the younger characters we know so
well really are amazing. Apocalypse
takes place in the 80’s some years after Days of Future Past where Mystic is a
hero among mutants and Magneto is a wanted man but one who has disappeared
while Charles has been running his school and helping mutants understand and
control their powers.
We’ve
had past looks at Magneto, Charles, Raven, Beast along with Quicksilver and even
our CIA agent. However this time we get
out first real look at young Jean Grey, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Storm, Psylocke and
Angel as well. Quicksilvers scene in the
last movie was one of my favorite scenes because it was just so much fun, and
he has a similar scene in this one putting his powers and quirky personality to
the test again to a great soundtrack that just makes you laugh. I dare you to watch it and not at least crack
a smile.
The
bond between these characters is beautiful, since the first movie the
connection between Charles and Magneto and their friendship and how even on
opposite ends of things they have that respect for one another. They are vastly different and the actors play
off one another well. The whole cast
does a great job in my opinion. Raven as
she struggles with who and what she is now, no longer as comfortable in her
natural mutant form with everyone expecting her to be a hero. Magneto and a particular scene in the forest
that just starts the whole movie really going forward in a huge way.
Apocalypse
has tons of action scenes and some good CGI that didn’t seem exceptionally
cheesy. We also got our Wolverine scene
in there that again plays well into the whole universe. There were also some battles fought on the
mental front and instead of simply having it be a battle of wills that it is,
it’s shown in a my substantial and physical way that shows the depth and
severity of it all. All in all I think
it was a great movie and I look forward to seeing what will happen next.

This
one I had huge hopes for in 3D as the first Alice was the BEST movie I had ever
saw in 3D before. That said my theatre
had to readjust the projector during the first 3D trailer so maybe that played
into it but the 3D wasn’t nearly as epic as the first. Again it may have been technical difficulties
but while I saw some cool 3D here and there it wasn’t as immersive as the first
so that kind of let me down some.
The
story itself takes place three years after the first, when Alice came back to
her world and took charge of her own destiny rather than marry some horrid boy
as society would like. She is yet again
facing societies expectations of a woman after returning from her journey as a
sea captain she finds things have changed.
As her world is spinning she is pulled back to Wonderland only to find
things there have changed as well. Her
dear friend Hatter is fallen ill and only Alice can save him by taking on Time
himself. Yes Time is a person and a
thing and it is so convoluted and fun!
All
the things I loved in the first one were there from the beautiful landscapes
and bright and colorful world to the very colorful characters and the wonderful
quotes that just make you think. I
enjoyed the story well enough, save Hatter by going through time. The experience was fun and going back in time
we learn more about both the Hatter and the queens while also teaching valuable
lessons like the importance of family and of being yourself and with that to
not let the world tell you who you will be but to make your own path in it and
find your true self.
While
I really enjoyed all of these aspects I didn’t love it as much as the first be
it for the 3D let down and it was a bit harder to follow and really be in
there. While I love Hatter I don’t see
where saving his life was worth everyone risking all of Wonderland itself and I
find it hard to believe so many would put that to be. Still really enjoyed it and plan to buy it
when it’s out. That’s all for now I’d

So
today is the 25th (okay so I lost track of my days for a bit and I'm two days late) which means it is time for my monthly challenge update and
wrap-up; Month 5. Basically I want to
share my progress with you all and it helps me hold myself accountable. With that in mind this is how I’ve done this
month.
None this month but I'm closer to finishing a couple series so hoping to have a couple next month! Though technically I finished the original Selection trilogy lol.
All
in all I'd say it was a pretty successful month. I didn't get to finish or review my debuts
but that just means next month will be even better! I'd love to hear how you're doing so link

happy readers! I’m beyond ready for this
weekend. I attended The Last Star (The 5th
Wave #3) launch party at Little Shop of Stories on Tuesday with the author Rick
Yancey and I have a signed copy and some other swag in a giveaway here. I was super excited to be caught up and I’m
ready to dive into that book myself but I have some others in the que
first. One I finished via audiobook on
the round trip drive to the event, which I’ll be discussing today and that is
Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor, the sequel to Daughter of Smoke
and Bone which I reviewed here. You know
the drill as with any sequel there will be spoilers for the first book in the
series.

Once
upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a world
free of bloodshed and war. This is not
that world.
That
is pretty much an accurate summary. When
we left off Karou had just regained her memories of her past time and realized
that the man, or angel really, she loved Akiva had done some unspeakable things
having thought he had lost her forever.
Karou is determined to go to her once home of Eretz to find out what is
left of her people, the chimaera.
Finding her people all but whipped out and feeling a burning hatred for
the angels she volunteers her services, taking her mentor and father-figures
place as the resurrectionist to build more monster like chimaera to fight the
angels and take back what was taken, even if it means working with the one who
killed her in her first life. Akiva is
in a horrid place himself having realized the mistake he had made and knowing
he had once again lost the love of his life, but this time because of his own
actions. Still all he can do at this
point is to try and make amends for her and himself as he once more swears off
killing the chimaera and instead vows to help as many as he can even as he puts
himself at risk of discovery.
All
the things I loved in the first book, the beautiful writing and the world and
all the interesting and fantastical creatures are back and even better. We spend a good portion of the time
surrounded by chimaera and large chunks in Eretz. I just adored the world that was built and
how intricate everything was but yet simple enough to understand. The first book had a lot to do with wishes
which I loved the idea of, who doesn’t, but this one left those out as we have
moved past it. Still magic has a
price. This is something else I
enjoy. I love all types of magic in
stories but for some reason the magic that comes with a price, something for
something rather than someone having unlimited power always seems more
substantial. You can see the price the
magic takes on Karou, the pain tithe.
First let me just say I’d never do magic I have ZERO tolerance for pain,
seriously my vehicle accident at the start of the year broke my pinky finger
and I thought it would hurt less to chop it off than to keep bumping it or
moving it. I’m a big baby there I
know.
Karou
is still a strong character for me if not a bit pigheaded at times. She goes through each and every resurrection and
no matter how hurt she is she keeps going.
Karou is fighting her fight in rage and heartbroken but she also has a
strong sense of helping her people. She
is working with a monster, because it is the best hope for her people. I really enjoyed from both the chimaera camp
and the angel side. While I already
loved Akiva and the little bit I saw of Hazael and Liraz I loved Hazael he was
so funny and charming and easy going I think anyone could love him but Liraz
was kind of on my dislike list. However seeing
more in depth their life and what they go through as Joram’s bastards the
misbegotten and things with Jael she kind of grew on me. I also grew to enjoy Kirin and how he was the
last of Karou’s kind to his crush on her as a young boy, awe. Him and Issa are some of my favorite of the
chimaera. Two who did not grow on me
were Thiago and Ten. I didn’t like
Thiago from book one the white wolf and his pomp, entitlement, and rage and Ten
is him in female form basically his lapdog.
Though to even out the field it was great to see Zuzana and Mik
again! I just adored them in the first
book Zuzana may be one of my favorite characters with her small stature but
fierce none the less. Also in the
audiobook version the accents done for the different characters Zuz’s was my
favorite. The sweetness between Zuzana
and Mik in the middle of the epic war going on played nicely to balance it
out.
Days
of Blood and Starlight is still a very character driven story but there is lots
of action happening.There is a war after
all.The brutality of war is there as
well.There were certain times while
listening that I was gripping the steering wheel so tightly that I thought I might
break it hoping something wouldn’t or would happen.It was intense.I also was glad to be in my vehicle where I could
yell at the characters and not have anyone hear my craziness because oh I was
in a full range of emotions for sure!I’m
excited to dive into book three but now having read one and listened to one I’m
stuck on which format I enjoyed better.I’d

“Waiting

are dying to get our hands on. This
week’s pick is:
Sefia

Why I’m Waiting:
Not
going to lie the title got my attention first.
I’m a reader after all. The idea
of a society where people don’t know what a book is horrifies me. Really because where would I be? The world has me interested to know more and
it just shows that a book can solve most things ;)

The top-ish today is: Books I feel
differently about over time
So I haven't re-read any of my childhood books,
that I remember, and I only got really into reading again a few years back so
my times between books aren't super substantial but here goes.
Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling- I love them more and more
each time I read them. It's like having
finished them and the movies and all the HP stuff everywhere to always fill you
with joy is enhances it!
Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick- I hadn't read any angel type
books at this point and I was caught with how they played out. Now looking back I don't know if I would view
them as highly as I did originally.
Evernight by Claudia Gray- This was a different take on
vampires for me and something very interesting.
Thinking about specific plot points now though I don't know if they
would touch me in the same way.
Kissed by an Angel by Elizabeth Chandler- Okay
this book got me in the feels. I
recently was thinking about this book, I don't remember why, and I think it
would still do the same thing to me.
Elixir by Hilary Duff- Okay so I was a huge Lizzie
McGuire fan and I loved her in some of her movies no matter how cheesy they are
I can still watch many of them so pair her with a beautiful cover and I was
down. I read the first two books when
they came out and only finished the series some time later and while I did
enjoy having completed the series it wasn't the same as I didn't have the same
connection to the characters that I did in the past.
Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl-
I read this series some time back and I was never in LOVE with it but I think
my like for it has fizzled with time.
House of Night series by P.C. Cast & Kristen
Cast- Okay so this one will always have a place in my heart as one of the
series I got into when first getting into books again and I do adore P.C.
Cast's writing and her ability to make some seriously LOL moments. Still not sure if I started the series for
the first time today if I'd enjoy them the same way.
Evermore series by Alyson Noel- I remember reading
this series as it came out and being captivated by it but over time while I'm
still glad to have read it I think it should have been condensed.

happy readers to another Monday. So this
weekend wasn't as productive as I would have liked but it was good none the
less and I was able to finish a book off my goal list to be prepared for the
release of the final book tomorrow.
That's right I read The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey. I read The 5th Wave (review) pretty much the
day before/day of seeing the movie opening weekend and was super stoked to dive
into this one but I also knew the next book wouldn't be out for a few months
and decided to hold off until closer to that time. Though once I found out about the signing
event at my favorite place, Little Shop of Stories, I knew I had to read before
then so A) I wouldn't be spoiled and B) I could discuss and ask questions. So that said I'll be getting a copy of TheLast Star signed tomorrow for one lucky reader all the details will be at the
bottom of this post.

The
Infinite Sea takes place where we left off in the 5th Wave. Cassie has found her brother, and her old
school crush who is now a surrogate type big brother to Sam, and his crew. Her other boyfriend of sorts just risked
everything to help and was going to blow the place up, hit the others where it
hurts. He promised he would find her
again but with the explosion and all she isn't certain he made it out. I know I was upset thinking the same
thing. The group is hold up trying to
wait for Evan to keep his promise and find them but also to make another
plan. We focus this time on more POV's
including Ringer, who had a large portion, and even some smaller sections from
the silent Poundcake which were different.
We discover more the depths the others will sink to in order to
eradicate humanity. Many battles are
fought with life and death, hope and despair, love and hate.
First
let me say I really did enjoy this follow up and everything it had to offer. I think for the most part it kept the pace and
moved along while offering lots of action as well as psychological and
emotional aspects. There was a bit of
slowness towards the beginning for me before it really kicked off but not
enough that it really detracted. I think
the POV of Ringer was a bit off putting in the start. I liked her and I enjoyed her sections for
sure but I guess I was expecting to start off with Cassie again thinking her
the main character of the series for me so starting with Ringer and not knowing
it was her at first kind of threw me. Ringer
actually had a much larger POV than anyone else and the things she discovers
and the emotion she brings into things was unique. She comes off as a cold hard bitch but she
has so much going on inside of her that to see this, having only see the outer
shell before was refreshing. With the
vast majority of the population gone it is impossible to be unaffected by the
world and what the others have done but her misery started before that.
What
I did really love was seeing the dynamic between all the characters. So much of the last book was Cassie alone or
her and Evan together then Ben and his unit.
To see them together and how personalities clash and people adjust is
something fun. When her brother was
taken Sam was this small child who was scared and wanted his bear but now he's
a soldier, a tiny one for sure, but he is more fierce than she is used to
seeing him. Also trying to explain Evan
to the group is….hard. He didn't make it
easy by any means but yeah.
There
is a lot happening as we discover more and more about the others and their plan
for Earth. It really does twist and turn
and leaves you really messed up in the head by the end of it but in a good
way. There is A LOT happening. It's hard to really explain but I did enjoy
seeing it through Ringer's eyes.

happy readers! Another week has flown
right one by. Where does the time
go? Anywho I got some reading time in on
my days off and today I’m going to share my thoughts on one. This is an upcoming release which will be out
next week, Tuesday May 24th, and that is The Conch Shell of Doom by
Ryan Hill. I had the pleasure of connecting
with the author last year when I attended UtopiaCon, which sadly I won’t be
able to attend this this year, and was very pleased when he contacted me with
his new title. I was provided a copy for
an early honest review.

The
Conch Shell of Doom follow a group of very different people on a quest to save
the world. Bailey is your typical boring
high school kid dealing with anxiety and normal things on summer break when he
accidentally hears his parents plotting to unleash evil in the form of Trenton
Maroney and his oceanic army. He doesn’t
believe it at first but as he sees things that are undeniably not normal he is
forced to believe. Franklin, an immortal
searching for a way to finally end his brother once and for all instead of
simply stopping his return every few decades.
Within all of this is the powerful and mysterious Conch Shell of
Doom. All parties collide in this fun
quest to save or destroy the world as sides are picked and battles fought.
So
I went into this book not knowing a whole lot about it and just from the fun
cover and concept just dove in. I think
it was the perfect decision because this book is fun. There is plenty of serious things happening,
trying to save the world, good vs. evil, family drama, oceanic armies and the
like sure but it was also at its core fun.
The cover and title alone lead you to believe it will be a bit
whimsical. A conch shell being super
powerful, yep that’s crazy and funny.
There
is a diverse and eclectic cast of characters in this one for sure from the
hardened yet sentimental Franklin, don’t mess with his Mustang, to the
bartender with spunk, to the group of high school kids who are not what one
would call mature to the disfigured and magical Mr. Lovell to some minions
including crooked cops, a stoner, and more.
Each one had their own voice and traits that made them stand out. I think Julie might be my favorite
though.
The
whole story is quick witted and fast paced so you breeze right on through
it. It’s a series of events that are
humorous and fun but also have some serious notes to them. I don’t know how to describe it any other way
and explaining to much would take away some of the fun. It kind of reminded me in tiny pieces here
and there of some of my favorite things and there are pop culture references
galore! So for now I’ll just have to say
if you want a fun read pick up The Conch Shell of Doom and give it a go.

happy readers! So as you may know from
last week’s review of The Selection by Kiera Cass I am moving through the
series, somewhat slowly as I am listening to them and only have about a 5-7
minute commute to and from work so not a ton of listening to be had currently
but I have another trip coming up on the 24th so cheers there. I hope to at least finish up the original
three books in the series before moving on to the novellas and the two
spin-off/after books. So today, go
figure, I’m going to share my thoughts and feels for book two, The Elite, which
will contain spoilers from the first book if you haven’t read the series yet.

So
when we left off we had just went from a large group of girls down to the
Elite, and only six to boot as Maxon didn’t want to keep anyone around and in
danger unnecessarily. Things heat up in
the competition for Maxon’s heart as he girls are now expected to learn and do
more of what a princess would. America
has to figure out where her heart is, with her first love Aspen who broke her
heart but came back for her. Or Prince
Maxon, whom she has real feelings for but isn’t sure of everything that comes
with him, like the crown. She wants time
to try and make her decision but as things progress time may be against her and
she may lose her ability to choose.
In
book one I was not very fond of her interactions with Aspen once he came to the
palace. I was happy that he got out of
where he was and it turned out well for him and I even understand in some part
his reasons for breaking her heart. I
was even happy that it might give her closure but instead it opened up a new
can of worms. While she was developing
real feelings for Maxon she now had her first love waiting in the wings which
wasn’t fair to either to either guy even if Aspen was aware and Maxon was
technically dating many girls at once.
Morality aside it was risky and stupid to keep talking with him like
that and sneaking moments. As we move
forward though and things happen outside of the control and understanding of
America she is forced to see the not so pleasant side of ruling and she isn’t
pleased. Upset and pulling away from
Maxon and the crown leads him to waver in his certainty of her and look more
seriously at the other girls. Which adds
even more flames to the fire that is the mess of emotions.
Character
wise I still really liked Maxon though he had some moments where I was with
America in being uncertain. His reasons
make sense and paired with his inexperience they are almost sweet but he
expects her to understand his faults and missteps in that area but doesn’t
always offer the same with her in regards to the other girls and politics. Still I was firmly Team Maxon. Aspen on the other hand I enjoyed as a
character and I loved his support and loyalty to his country and America but I
didn’t approve of what he was doing in trying to win her while she was in the
selection. It is against the rules and
the risks are much too high. America was
still nervous and unsure and relatable if not a bit indecisive which got to me
a bit more on reflection than it did in the moment.
With
the girls being so few now we really got to dive more into them and who they
are, along with what they were there for.
Some suspicions were confirmed others enlightened. Also can I say how much I still love
Marley! The bond forged between her and
America was on point for me and something I think that was needed in the otherwise
cattiness that occurs in the situation.
Special note also to America's
maid, Ann, Mary, and Lucy were also so much fun. The way America interacts with them and they
are with her, true confidents who would do anything for her and she for them
seeing them as people. It kind of helps
keep her grounded in the opulence of the palace.
I
really liked the aspect of including the rebels and learning more about the
country as a whole. I always suspected
something was off but this did kind of catch me by surprise. Maybe because of how insane it was and how
honestly I think it could have played out.
How this way of life really happened. We also get to know more about other
countries as well from the dignitaries coming over to visit and interact, each
group unique with their different customs and preferences on being
handled. Also seeing the girls step up
and have more responsibility was good to see who shined and who failed.
Still
really enjoying the series and I'm excited to continue on in the series, I have
them all (accept the newest one) waiting for me on my shelf. I'm excited to have finally started this
series. While I wish I had been up on
the series before hand so I could have enjoyed all the talk of them I also like
not having to wait so there is that! I'd

Why I’m Waiting:

it's Sarah J. Maas and a Throne of Glass book!
I haven't finished Queen of Shadows yet, but that is strategically
planned. I was so devastated at the end
of Heir of Fire then having to wait a year to find out what happens….I didn't
want to devour it in one day and be left so long to wait. So I'm slowly reading it and hoping to finish
closer to the release date of this one so there is no wait. Though I did miss judge and there are planned
to be six books not five so I could possibly do this again next time….for the

Books I READ on a whim
Meant to Be by Lauren Morrill–It looks so bright and pretty!
Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater- I saw the cover in
the store one day and it just made me want to see more and now she's an
auto-buy author!
A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick–I don't even remember how I
came to this one but I did enjoy it.
There are more but I was having a brain lapse lol.
Books I BOUGHT on a whim but haven't read yet:
Adorkable by Sarra Manning– I say
"adorkable" all the time and then I happened to see it was the title
of a book….knowing nothing about it but the title I knew I needed to have it.
Semi-Charmed Life by Nora Zelevansky- Okay so I
was having a 90’s moment and jamming out to the 90’s station and had just
recently been singing out the lyrics to “Semi-Charmed Life” by Third Eyed Blind
and yeah it just made me need it.
I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga- A book about a guy
who has a history with a killer….I saw this after I had tossed around a few
ideas similar to it for a story myself.
Eat, Brains, Love by Jeff Hart- I saw this one on sale
super cheap on BookOutlet and I just finished a TWD marathon and figured
zombies….score!
Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepetys- I'm not a
big historical fiction type of girl but for some reason when I saw this one I
needed to buy it. I think it may have
something to do with the cover.
