All the Feels

Hello happy readers!  So today I wanted to share a review I did for No BS Book Reviews because it was so adorable and I loved it!  I had to share it here as well but you can find my original post in full here.  But yeah I have mentioned it a few times and wanted it on here as well!  That is All the Feels by Danika Stone.

Rating:  5 Stars

This story is about a girl who is all about her fandom.  After the latest movie comes out and the lead, her hero is killed off she can't handle it and dives into her fandom for comfort.  Then an insane idea hits and with the help of her friend and her skills she plans to bring him back. She is juggling this epic task with school, family, and a pretty disastrous love life.  Oh and hanging out with her best friend. This book is full of feels!

This book was just adorable.  Seriously.  Okay so it's about a major fangirl which I can totally relate to.  She's also a bit of a recluse and spends more time with online people than in real life, again I can relate to that.

Awesome factor:  The chapters all started with a quote from a movie/series/etc that has a huge fandom which only added to my desire to get to the next chapter to see what was picked next.  It was really something extra that just made me feel all the feels, pun intended.

Liv was such a dynamic character because she had such passion for something and no one was going to deter her from it.  Liv was far from perfect and had some issues balancing things in her life but who doesn't?  I know I do.  Over time I've learned to adapt but she's still young and again something I think most can relate with.  But my favorite characteristic of Liv and what made her dear to me is her total acceptance of Xander and his steampunk cosplay lifestyle and was never embarrassed about it.  True friendship for sure.

Xander is the same way.  He is there for her and always happy to listen to her and help her out.  He had some of the best lines that just had me grinning.  The things that came out of his mouth.  Plus he was sexy as all get out and not gonna lie I kind of dig the steampunk thing.

Part of the book takes place at DragonCon.  I've heard nothing but amazing things about this event, which I am hoping to maybe be able to swing attending next year for the first time.  But to read a first time encounter from a fangirl just makes me want to go all the more.  It also made me want fast food at odd hours.

That's it.  This book is all about the feels, the emotions and connections between people, fandoms, and everything in between.  Its super fast to fly through and totally worth the read!

~Waiting on Wednesday~ The Midnight Star (The Young Elites #3)

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.  Basically books that are not yet out that we are dying to get our hands on.  This week’s pick is:

The Midnight Star (The Young Elites #3) by Marie Lu
Out: 10/11

From Goodreads:
The thrilling finale to the New York Times bestselling Young Elites series from “hit factory” Marie Lu.

There was once a time when darkness shrouded the world, and the darkness had a queen.

Adelina Amouteru is done suffering.  She’s turned her back on those who have betrayed her and achieved the ultimate revenge:  victory.  Her reign as the White Wolf has been a triumphant one, but with each conquest her cruelty only grows.  The darkness within her has begun to spiral out of control, threatening to destroy all that she’s achieved.

Adelina’s forced to revisit old wounds when a new danger appears, putting not only Adelina at risk, but every Elite and the very world they live in.  In order to save herself and preserve her empire, Adelina and her Roses must join the Daggers on a perilous quest—though this uneasy alliance may prove to be the real danger.

Bestselling author Marie Lu concludes Adelina’s story with this haunting and hypnotizing final installment to the Young Elites series.

Why I’m Waiting:
Ummm OMG do you have to ask?  This series has been so different and so dark following Adelina who has morphed through the first two books I’m dying to see where she ends up next!  Plus it’s the last book and with how things left off in The Rose Society I need to know more!!!!

Top Ten Tuesday: TV shows I wish hadn't ended

Hello everyone!  Top Ten Tuesday is just how it sounds, a topic is picked and we put our Top Ten for that in a post and share and check out everyone’s answers.  Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  Also wanted to announce the winner to The Winner's Kiss Giveaway is: Amanda!  Congrats and look for the e-mail!

The top ten today is:  A Freebie so I went with…TV shows I wish hadn't ended

I don't normally talk TV shows I try to stay on bookish topic but sigh I was always bad at making decisions.

Moonlight- Why?  It was so good stupid writers strike messing with it.

Firefly-No idea why this was ever taken off but clearly it was a mistake.

Veronica Mars- The promo/look into what would have been Season 4 was amazing!  While I’m happy to have the movie and the following books still.

Merlin- This show was so much fun and I was sad to see it go.

Eureka- There was still so much that could have happened in this world!

Leverage- More heists could have taken place!  Even if they just picked up where they left off and added new members to the team  Leverage 2.0

Tru Calling- I liked this one and recently watched a few episodes and still get the theme song stuck in my head.

Burn Notice- This show is one of the main reasons I am probably on some terror watch list because it would describe things and it sounded so legit I of course would then google it just for kicks….

Lie to Me- I found this after it ended but I had so much fun marathoning it.

Buffy- Another show I watched post ending and as it had a long run it fell into the scope of things but still it was sad to come to the end.

Special note just ended:
Person of Interest- I had some warning about this one as it was stated it was the last season but still

Castle- I found out it was canceled as I was watching what I thought was the season finale and it turned into the series finale L

Tell me what you think of my list in the comments below.  Which would you recommend so I know which ones to get first?  Also please link back to your Top Ten as well so I can check out your list and see what I missed!

Just a Few Inches

Hello happy readers!  First announcement the giveaway for a SIGNED copy of The Winner’s Kiss by Marie Rutkoski closes tonight!  This weekend was pretty eventful for me, I spent all day Saturday with my family which was fun (my dad also hooked up my back-up camera so score!) and the other days were spent sleeping, reading, and baking/cooking.  I tried a couple new ideas for baking with grasshopper cookies and tiramisu cupcakes and they are currently being taste tested by my co-workers.  Some of the reading I did was to pick up Justa Few Inches by Tara St. Pierre.  I received a copy from the author for an honest review.

Rating: 4 Stars

Just a Few Inches is a YA contemporary novel with a small sci-fi element that deals with body image, self-esteem, and teenage relationships with both friends and family.  Carrie likes herself well enough but she would like to be a little more or less in some areas; a bit larger chest and a bit less overall weight.  She’s a cheerleader and has a star basketball player boyfriend and two amazing best friends, her life is good.  But as her boyfriend’s ex starts to become more flirtatious with him again Carrie feels more pressure than before to find the perfect dress to the Valentine’s Day Dance.  She finds it.  THE dress is perfect, but she is a few inches away from it zipping and no amount of exercise or dieting will work in the time she has so she succumbs to an ad for weight loss pills promising a quick solution.  Just a few inches slimmer is the goal.  Dance day and all is perfect in life until days later she begins to notice she is no longer her usual size.  She wasn’t losing a few inches the way she imagined but instead was shrinking.  She much work with her doctors to find a cure while leaning on her family and friends and taking a hard look at what has happened to her.

I’m past my high school days and while I do accept my body much more now than I ever thought possible back in school I’m still not comfortable with it all the time.  I have a better understanding over time though and my feelings are based more on health than other things like in the past.  Just a Few Inches tackles the whole concept of body image in a way that forces one character to reflect on it in the most extreme way possible.  Carrie is shrinking and not how she’d hoped and also not stopping.  There are impossible standards put before us at such a young age these days from filters to airbrushing and more from magazines and TV/movies it’s all there.  Last night I even counted the amount of diet/weight loss ads I saw in only four hours: twelve different ads some playing multiple times.  I liked Carrie because she knew the ads were a joke and the media was manipulating her into thinking she needed them but even knowing that logically her brain and heart still were ready to do anything to fit into the perfect dress.  I could reflect back and think this book may have been even more impactful back when I was in school and was dealing with the issues in a more immediate way.
Relationships are one of the most important things in this book and something I really enjoyed.  Both with her family and friends there were ups and downs.  Carries family is a combo of her and her younger her step-sister and her half-sister and her mom and stepdad.  Siblings can be difficult on a good day and monsters on others I know and I liked the way the author captured that.  She really brought in how the matter not only effected Carrie but those around her.  She also has her two best friends Trish and Lauren who I loved and totally could see as some of my friends.  They both have their own different personalities that play off one another well and it’s easy to see why they are friends.  Another character I enjoyed was Evan and how he worked through the story, from her co-editor on the school paper who is constant.

Another character and subplot I enjoyed was that of rival cheerleader and all around mean girl Janelle.  Around this time I also came to my slight issue.  Carrie was much more forgiving than anyone I ever knew.  Some of the things people do to her that she just moves on from with understand are things I would have lost my mind over.  I could see it showing as while she was getting smaller physically she was being a bigger person in whole and I like the symbolism there but personally some things that people got away with rubbed me the wrong way.  Even knowing the circumstances I had no sympathy.  I recently watched a movie I can’t remember the title of but it popped up on Netflix about a teen who is bullied and things around it and I remember at the end it was how the bully didn’t realize she was so mean and she had some issues of her own which while I understand I don’t think anything you go through gives you the right to bully others to make yourself feel better.  But I digress that could be a whole post in and of itself.

The way things played out as she got smaller and smaller and the challenges she faced each and every day were something insane.  Some I thought of immediately being an issue but other things brought up I never would have thought of and now they make me think about The Borrowers or Thumbelina a bit differently.  I’m 5’7 and can generally reach most things without assistance but the idea of not being able to any longer is disconcerting.

Overall the book was a quick read and it was sweet and cheesy at times but it was good and more importantly it has a good message.  I think most can relate to the story and see some aspect of their current or past selves in her.  I would recommend this as a good perspective book and definitely for anyone currently in middle school or high school.  I am glad to have read this story.  I’d love to hear your thoughts on the book or the premises in the comments below.

Unhooked

Happy Thursday everyone!  This week is kind of sad because last year I was at UtopiaCon but this year given the accident and the expense it created I wasn’t able to attend this year so to all my friends there have fun for me and I hope to see you next year.  Bright side is the new Orange is the New Black season is on Netflix and I didn’t marathon it in a day, though it was mostly because the day I found out it was up Netflix was down for most of the day and after that I had work so some sleep was required.  I have three or four episodes left though!  Anywho that said update there are still a few days left in my current giveaway for a SIGNED copy of The Winner’s Kiss by Marie Rutkoki along with the Fierce Reads tote so don’t forget to enter here.  Last week I read a re-imagining type book that was also a standalone and I wanted to discuss it, Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell.

Rating:  4 Stars

Unhooked is about a girl named Gwen who has been moving around all her life because he mom is a bit strange and always running from “monsters” hunting them.  This has all taken a toll on her over the years and when they move to London, she finds herself wanting to break free of it and have something real and lasting.  Taken by shadowy creatures and dragged from her world, Gwen realizes her mom wasn’t so crazy after all.  She is now in Neverland, not the storybook place she read or watched as a child but something much darker.  Her memories of who she is and her world slip through her fingers and she struggles to hold onto herself as she tries to figure out just who to trust along the way, the charming flying Pan who says all the right things or the roguish young pirate who promises to keep her safe.  Filled with Fey, shadow creatures, flesh-eating hags and more this is not the Neverland you know.

So I went into this not knowing much other than it was a re-imagining of Peter Pan and as I love me some Disney so I was on board.  Plus I also adore Once Upon A Time and one of my favorite characters since they went to Neverland has been Hook, AKA Killian Jones so yep roguish pirate….I was imagining Killian.  Maybe that influenced me when reading?  Either way I was interested to see a different take on it.  Having said that it wasn’t completely as original to me as it could have been.

Yummy right!
Still I liked the take on Neverland with the Fey and the shadow creatures and most importantly the idea that Neverland takes your memories.  The struggle to remember who you are, to try and make decisions based on facts and truths and not allowing yourself to be pulled into something was real.  Also there was a certain allure that she struggled against.  Gwen was interesting to read from given the memory issues but even without the full depth of all of her memories we still were able to keep her sense of who she was.  She was struggling with so many emotions fear, revulsion, anger, betrayal, attraction, confusion and more and it played into how she reacted and how she moved forward.  Same note Captain was even a bit more developed than even our Gwen.  Spoilers abound there but I enjoyed learning about him as he wasn’t some grand hero he has a dark side.

There is a bit of everything happening from supernatural, action, suspense/mystery, and even some romance happening.  Overall it was a quick and interesting read and I would recommend it to anyone who likes retellings/re-imaginings.  I think from the synopsis I was expecting Olivia and her to be battling through things together but she wasn’t in it as much as I thought and she wasn’t as fully developed as I wanted her to be.  Though I did like the contrast between her and Gwen.  The only other thing was while the ending had some serious edge of my seat moments the very end I still had a few questions.  I could have seen easily adding a bit more length to the book but even as is I wasn’t unhappy with it and if anything it just made me want more.  I’d love to hear your thoughts and if you were hooked on Unhooked, I couldn't help myself, in the comments below.

~Waiting on Wednesday~ Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.  Basically books that are not yet out that we are dying to get our hands on.  This week’s pick is:

Out: 11/15

From Goodreads:
The New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling collection of short stories chronicling the adventures of Simon Lewis as he trains to become a Shadowhunter is now available in print for the first time with ten brand-new comic illustrations!

Simon Lewis has been a human and a vampire, ad now he is becoming a Shadowhunter.  The events of City of Heavenly Fire left him stripped of his memories, and Simon isn’t sure who he is anymore.  So when the Shadowhunter Academy reopens, Simon throws himself into this new world of demon-hunting, determined to find himself again.  Whomever this new Simon might be.

But the Academy is a Shadowhunter institution, which means it has some problems.  Like the fact that non-Shadowhunter students have to live in the basement.  At least Simon’s trained in weaponry—even if it’s only from hours of playing D&D.

Join Simon on his journey to become a Shadowhunter, and learn about the Academy’s illustrious history along the way, through guest lecturers such as Jace Herondale, Tessa Gray, and Magnus Bane.  Written by Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan, Maureen Johnson, and Robin Wasserman, these moving and hilarious short stories are perfect for the fan who just can’t get enough of the Shadowhunters.

Why I’m Waiting:
Okay so I know I could read them now but come on I want them on my shelf with my other books!  Plus it makes me feel better to read them as a whole book rather than individual short stories.  Doing that makes my Goodreads challenge shoot up and makes me feel like I’m cheating!  Plus again need it on my shelf to help fill out my Shadowhunter shelf because yes they need their own shelf at this point.  Plus if you look at the cost it seems cheaper to buy the physical bind-up than each individual book if you are patient enough.

What are you waiting on?  Tell me below what you think of this title and leave a link to your WoW as well so I can check it out!

The Crown's Game (The Crown's Game #1)

Hello happy readers!  Another exciting day hopefully full of reading and other goodies.  Today I’m sharing a review for a debut book that was originally posted at No BS Book Reviews, here.  This debut book is one I was anticipating hard and even more excited when it was in my hands and that is The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye!

Rating:  5 Stars

This has been one of my most anticipated books of 2016 after I heard about it and having read it the sequel is my most anticipated book whenever it comes out!  OMG AMAZING!  I was completely blown away by this story and everything in it.  Enchanters and magic, secret games, murder plots, a beautiful and amazing world, political intrigue, strong characters and lots of feels galore.  It had everything.

We follow several characters but the primaries are Vika and Nikolai our tow enchanters and Pasha, Nikolai's best friend and heir to the throne.  Vika has grown up away from everything only training to one day be the Imperial Enchanter, never knowing that she would have to battle it out for the position.  Nikolai however has known he would have to play a game for the roll but even he didn't know how series the stakes were.  Death for one.  These are serious stakes.  More so when overtime all three form a connection of sorts.  It's not easy to kill someone you don't know but to kill someone you care for seems impossible.  As a reader it was difficult knowing one was meant to die, trying to figure out as I read who I liked more so I wouldn't get too attached to the wrong one but it was hopeless as I didn't want either to die!

I really enjoyed getting to know all the different characters and how they have different quirks about themselves.  From the mains to the supporting characters who played just as big of a part.  From their mentors or servants and bakers to the Tsar and royal family themselves each one plays a part and they are introduced for a reason but I never felt like they were only there to move the story along each one felt natural and purposeful.  The friendships and relationships between the different characters both good and bad were deep.  My favorite being the friendship between Nikolai and Pasha!  Those two were so on point and just a ying and yang of one another in the perfectly balance way.

The world is so beautiful and while I have never been to Russia I felt like I have seen a piece of it.  A piece of history wrapped up in magic and wonder.  The scenes described where so real, my favorite parts involved benches.  Vivid and miraculous to say the least.  The magic of the world was explained in a way that I understood but I see room for more to be explained through the series as we discovered new information, from nymphs and healers and more.

The Crown's Game had a bit of everything in it and I highly recommend it because I need people to talk to about it!  Everything tied in nicely from the romance to the political aspects to the game itself.  The game was not what I originally expected a battle between the two in the traditional sense but a competition which I liked a bit better having finished it, with the tasks which pulled you into each page imagining each one as they played out.  The book is impossible to put down and quick to fly through IMHO!

There's nothing else I can say without giving away some spoilers which I just can't bring myself to do because uncovering it all is half the fun.  I do recommend this and would love to hear what everyone thinks of this.  I know I'm ready for book two already! I’d love to hear your thoughts and feels in the comments below!

                Until next time…

Ivory & Bone (Ivory & Bone #1)

Hello happy readers!  So first things first I have an open giveaway here for a SIGNED copy of The Winner's Kiss by Marie Rutkoski, the final book in the trilogy along with a Fierce Reads tote and a couple other little swag items they handed out at the signing.  Now onto the other goodies I reviewed Ivoryand Bone, a prehistoric fantasy that I reviewed over at No BS Book Reviews here.  Check it out as part of the blog tour with other goodies including a giveaway open for 4 more days!

Rating:  4.5 Stars

So I went into this one very intrigued.  I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever read a prehistoric fantasy.  I was curious.

Jumping ahead to having read it and I am so glad I picked this one up.  For me it did have it’s somewhat rough parts towards the start where it was a bit slower in pace, I understand hunting is a huge part of their life but the importance and spirit of felt a bit drawn out and over explained more so as it was addressed a few times throughout the story, but the concept kept me moving forward.  Also a huge chunk of the story is told in a story, like the MC Kol is telling someone a story and it reads like he is talking to you the reader which was different for me.  Lots of firsts for me with this book.

Way way back in a hunter/gatherer type of world where you lived in tribes and literally made your own everything, yes really prehistoric and a world my modern self would never survive in out MC Kol is the eldest son of the tribe elder and has several brothers and things for their tribe seem to be pretty good, minus the lack of females in their age groups.  At seventeen this is a bit of a serious thing to be thinking about.  I liked him from the start he’s the oldest but not the best at things one might assume he should be but he isn’t resentful.  He’s content with his life.  He’s also somewhat awkward, which is fun to see that as a trait of humans throughout the world.

Then one day they receive visitors from another tribe bringing girls and possibilities.  However, Mya isn’t one to trust easily and she has her own issues with his tribe which only add to her look of disdain and her harsh words/actions.  She was a bit rough around the edges but as the story progressed her actions and motives become clearer and we see more of who she is right along with Kol.

Kol really cares for his family as evident with the way he talks about them, from his parents to his brothers whom also play a rather important part as slightly younger brother Pek has developed strong feelings for Mya's sister and is determined to fight for her which would link Kol and Mya's tribes together which given the shifting feelings with each interaction it could be good or bad.

Along with Mya's clan making contact another clan comes near as well, also having girls in the tribe.  A tribe that has a difficult past with Mya's clan.  Tensions are high as Kol's people are placed in the middle of something they had no part in.  War is brewing and it's unclear who is the aggressor.  Violence ensues forcing sides to be drawn an bonds tested.

People back then were much stronger than we seem to be today and that shows with how determined they are to fight and to live.  Injured and want to lay down and heal, nope suck it up you have to keep going and keep fighting you can rest when it's over or you're dead.  Minus a little bit of drag, it had it all.  It was new and different and introduced me to things I would never have thought about before.   Also this writing style made me feel like part of the book and had the added benefit of giving me an inside look at what Kol is thinking and by doing so giving Mya an insight into how he saw things up until this point.  I really enjoyed it and look forward to learning more about this world and seeing where the author goes from here.

~Waiting on Wednesday~ Heartless

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.  Basically books that are not yet out that we are dying to get our hands on.  This week’s pick is:

Heartless by Marissa Meyer
Out: 11/8

From Goodreads:
Long before she was the terror of Wonderland – the infamous Queen of Hearts – she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.

Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the yet-unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere.  A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend and supply the Kingdom of Hearts with delectable pastries and confections.  But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next Queen.

At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the king’s marriage proposal, she meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker.  For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction.  At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship.

Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms.  But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

Why I’m Waiting:
First it’s Marissa Meyer and a fairytale retelling, sold.  Second, I love the idea of her being a baker, maybe because I love baking, but it seems so different and I can’t think of many where the character is a baker.  Also who doesn’t love a good backstory on the Queen of Hearts?

What are you waiting on?  Tell me below what you think of this title and leave a link to your WoW as well so I can check it out!
