Truthwitch

Hello happy readers.  I hope you had a fantabulous weekend.  I worked through mine but I did get some reading done and one of the books I finished, like literally just a few minutes before typing this up, is Truthwitch by Susan Dennard.  Now I read and reviewed her other trilogy Something Strange and Deadly, A Darkness Strange and Lovely, and Strange and Ever After, earlier in the year.  I had been waiting for this book since I found out about it back when I attended a Sarah J. Maas signing that her BFF Dennard surprised her at which was boss for us attending we got an extra author plus together they are a hoot.  Anywho I learned about the story and had been craving it since.  Finally I read it with the Goodreads Group Perpetual YA Bookworms and finished it yesterday or this morning as I'm a few hours behind on night shift.

Rating:  5 Stars

Truthwitch centers around two female witches, Threadsisters, Safiya and Iseult.  They fall on opposite ends of the spectrum in the world of class and such but they are bound and best friends.  After a mishap they end up wanted and searching for them is the Bloodwitch, Aeduan, who can track anyone anywhere after he has their sent.  Worst of all he can sent the power in the blood and that means he knows the secret Safiya has fought to keep hidden, that she is a Truthwitch.  Merik the prince and admiral of the Nubrevna and only want to help his people but finds himself a reluctant ally in the mess Safiya and Iseult are part of running from the Bloodwitch and many others.  The girls only want freedom and to escape the danger lurking for them at every corner but with the twenty year truce coming to an end war is coming and no one is safe.

If I'm honest after being so excited for this book I was a bit worried in the beginning because I wasn't instantly in love.  It had a lot to take in and it starts with a bang for sure but with all the unfamiliar names, places, terms and world it was a bit much to take in at fist and the shifts in POV were a bit harder.  But then as I continued and I got a handle on the names everything just started to fall into place and I started to enjoy it more and more with each page.

The world is still growing as we spend most of the story on the run the scenery is constantly changing which was fun and I liked the world I was seeing so far.  Still more to learn and see.  The concept for magic in the world with each person having a witchery and how different elements could focus in on different specialties was pretty bad ass and some connections were made I never would have thought of but as I read it they made perfect sense.  Plus the action there was always something happening and I felt like I was right there in the action from fights, chases, pirates, creatures, and so much more you won't be bored.
Who doesn't love a good map in a book?
But I think my favorite part was the characters.  There is still much to be flushed out on some of the characters for sure but I got a good sense of who Safiya, Iseult, and Merik were.  Safiya of Safi has hidden what she is for fear of being killed or used as a pawn her whole life with her rare gift of being able to tell lie and truth, oh and she's a Domna.  Iseult is a Nomatsi, an outcast of sorts that people are fine treating none to kindly.  Safi and Iseult are Threadsisters and their connection and love for one another is great.  No matter what they have one another's backs and that's that.  They know one another perfectly and balance one another out and bring out the best in each other while accepting the flaws and the mistakes they both make.  Then with Merik we know who he is and what he wants and while his pride sometimes gets the best of him he has a good heart and that shows through in his driving force.  There are some amazing side characters as well that I hope to learn more about in depth in following stories and I feel Aeduan has much more to him and we only scratched the surface of a very deep well there.

Overall this was a fantastic read for me and I am super excited to continue on in the series.  Truthwitch set things up nicely for more in the series with many things open and ready for more but still managing to be a complete story in itself.  I can't wait to learn more about the Puppeteer, Cahr Awen, Cleaving, the war, and so many other little tidbits that have been dangled in front of me.  I'd love to hear your thoughts below, tell me what witchery you'd like to have.  I'm undecided  there are so many awesome ones but to control air or metal seem like top picks to me.  I mean using air you basically fly and who hasn't always wanted to fly?

                Until next time…

Cruel Beauty

Hello and happy Friday!  I'm working this weekend but still plan to have a great time and hopefully do some good reading!  I've been trying to do really good about keeping up with reviews in a relatively close time to reading books but as I was discussing fairytale retellings with someone the other day and one mentioned was Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge and I realized I read it last year and really enjoyed it but never wrote a review.  That needs to be fixed so here it is.

Rating: 4.5 Stars

Cruel Beauty is a loose Beauty & the Beast retelling that also deals in magic and mythology.  We follow Nyx who has been betrothed to an evil ruler of the kingdom since birth because of a deal her dad made.  Since she was old enough to understand she has been trained to kill her husband to be.  She is resentful that of the twins she was the chosen one and treated differently always for a choice made for her.  She has no choice and instead plans to seduce and destroy him and the curse put on her people for over 900 years.  But when Nyx meets Ignifex finally he is not what she expected.  He is charming, handsome, and seems giving and caring rather than the evil she knows him to be.  Even his magical castle captivates her.  Still she searches for a way to free her people by uncovering his secrets and trying to fight the attraction to him.  It is insane after all to fall for your sworn enemy.

So this was different that I expected.  Going in I knew mostly that it was a B&B retelling and as that is one of my all time favorite Disney movies that I watch at least once every couple of months while singing along to every word I had to read it.  Plus the cover was so beautiful!  I see the parallels to the classic but it isn't so strict that it's predictable.  Nyx was at times a bit rough around the edges and hard but she is a seventeen year old girl who was treated different than her twin her whole life and somehow picked to be married off to some dark lord by her father.  That is horrible parenting so yeah while her inner rants might seem a bit excessive at times I was okay with it knowing what she went through.  Plus come on who wouldn't be constantly thinking about the things that ended them in a certain position?

There is a common edge to Ignifex and Shadow.  They seem similar in some aspects, handsome and charming in some respects but like opposites in others at first.  You also have our dark lord Ignifex who was much the beast I loved from the movies.  Not the beastly appearance, he's described as very handsome, but in that he is different than expected, kind but can have a cruel side and he gives her freedom to explore but keeps secrets from her.  Though he never pushes himself upon her for company or anything else.  He is rather the gentlemen at times.  Shade seems perfectly charming and friendly, open and honest without a single bad thing going for him, even a captive much like Nyx, but like Ignifex there is always more to a person than first glance or reputation.

The story progresses in a way I enjoyed and Nyx is able to see more of him Ignifex and wavers back and forth on her duty.  He is the master of bargains and while some seem cruel she is able to understand some of his reasoning.  Everyone in her world knows he is the devil and he bargains always cost more than they are worth but yet they still come.  I love how her inner darkness, her hate and resentment end up making her a better match for him being able to understand things more easily.  Still while the heart might say one thing it is selfish to make a choice for only oneself when an entire kingdom is at stake.  But can you crush the one good thing you finally found to save those who never treated you nearly as well?  It's a touch call and being in her head while she rationed through it all was what made it for me.

Anywho that's really all there is to say without spoiling it.  I have not yet picked up the other books by Hodge yet though I do look forward to doing so.  I have a couple on my shelf or kindle ready to go.  I'd love to hear your thoughts below.  Also please share any other B&B retellings because I'm sure I've missed some.

                Until next time…

You Were Here

Hello everyone!  So a few hours ago I posted my second monthly challenge wrap up here and now I'm ready to post the review I have been super excited about since finishing this book last weekend.  You Were Here by Cori McCarthy,  I received a digital ARC of this book through NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review, so thanks to them.  This title comes out next week, March 1st.

Rating:  5 Stars

You Were Here is about a girl named Jaycee who had her life turned upside down when her brother Jake died in front of her five years prior.  She hasn't dealt with things and has instead become somewhat of a daredevil taking any dare and trying to keep her brother alive in some way.  We start on the anniversary of his death, where she normally goes and breaks into Jake's favorite place, an old asylum.  This year she is joined unexpectedly by some classmates, her former best friend and her boyfriend, and someone dealing with a  broken heart, and the one person her expects to be there Mik an old friend of Jake's who's been meeting her this day for the past couple of years.  This one night leads into a serious of dares, things left behind by Jake that Jaycee decides to take on and complete while her newfound band of fellow explorers join and try to get her to face her past and maybe learn a few things about themselves.

I didn't know a ton about this book when I went into it.  The cover caught my eye and then the idea of stunts and dares combined with the idea of facing grief was enough to interest me.  Everyone is different.  Everyone handles things in life differently, Jaycee almost turned into her lost brother in a way.  The story is told through multiple POVs but also more interestingly in different formats.  One character simply a picture, a piece of art he did while another is told in graphic novel form which was beyond amazing and one of the many reasons I can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy next week.  The other three are the normal words on the page kind but no less amazing.

Our band of misfits do some stupid things.  With Jaycee and her somewhat off-putting complete and blunt truth 24/7 is a bit harsh at times but she was always true to that self and that was nice.  She hasn't dealt with her brothers death and it's had an impact on her life.  Natalie is a straight laced girl full of plans and how things should be, planning rather than living and not feeling much of life.  Zach is a bit of a party boy who is good hearted but a bit immature sometimes.  Bishop the heartbroken guy who has good intentions but can come off as a bit aloof in his pain.  And Mik, the selective mute who doesn't speak often but still has so much presence to himself and when he does talk he is just….I fell for him.  At the start they seemed a bit hard to like, well accept Mik I liked him from his first page, but then somehow without me noticing I was invested and cared about all of them and wanted so many things for them.

You Were Here also manages to keep things real and focus on real issues like grief and all that can bring from stress, depression, and recklessness.  Each person in the story was dealing with things in their own way and that is how life goes.  Not everyone handles things the same way, and I particularly loved Jaycee and her truth and how when people asked how she refused to simply say fine.  It makes you think how often you reply fine when you are not in fact fine and on the flip side how often you ask about another person and expect them to tell you the same.  I liked the realism there, even if parts were to the extreme they made for a great read.  Oh and having the romance in there developing in its adorkable way just made me swoon a little bit.

Now one of the other amazing things in this book is that as they move about and go to these old locations, which FYI are real locations and some of them are still standing, you could feel like you were there.  And even more fun for me is they are 2-3 hours from where I lived as a kid and used to go back and visit every summer growing up.  I had heard of the old mall and the theme park before so to have that previous point of reference and connection to growing up was super cool.  But even without that, simply knowing these places exist in the real world and not made up was pretty cool.  You can read all about the locations here in the authors own words.
One of the locations.
That's all I have to say on You Were Here.  I highly recommend this title and can't wait to re-read my physical copy.  It comes out March 1st, which is only next Tuesday so not that long of a wait!  Anywho I'd love to hear what you think about the book down below in the comments.  Also don't forget to check out my open giveaway (until  3/7/16) for a chance to win a signed copy of Blackhearts by Nicole Castroman here

                Until next time…

~Waiting on Wednesday~ The Glittering Court

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.  Basically books that are not yet out that we are dying to get our hands on.  This week’s pick is:

The Glittering Court by Richelle Mead
Out:  4/5

From Goodreads:
Big and sweeping, spanning the refined palaces of Osfrid to the gold dust and untamed forests of Adoria, The Glittering Court tells the story of Adelaide, an Osfridian countess who poses as her servant to escape an arranged marriage and start a new life in Adoria, the New World.  But to do that, she must join the Glittering Court.

Both a school and a business venture, the Glittering Court is designed to transform impoverished girls into upper-class ladies capable of arranging powerful and wealthy marriages in the New World.  Adelaide naturally excels in her training and even makes a few friends:  the fiery former laundress Tamsin and the beautiful Sirminican refugee Mira.  She manages to keep her true identity hidden from all but one:  the intriguing Cedric Thorn, son of the wealthy proprietor of the Glittering Court.

When Adelaide discovers that Cedric is hiding a dangerous secret of his own, together, they hatch a scheme to make the best of Adelaide’s deception.  Complications soon arise—first, as they cross the treacherous seas from Osfrid to Adoria, and later when Adelaide catches the attention of a powerful governor.

But no complication will prove quite as daunting as the potent attraction simmering between Adelaide and Cedric.  An attraction that, if acted on, would scandalize the Glittering Court and make them both outcasts in wild, vastly uncharted lands…

Why I’m Waiting:
Ummm….it’s Richelle Mead.  Do I need another reason?  She’s an auto-buy author for me.  But if you want more then how about the subterfuge and scheming that it promises.  Life on the run, arranged marriages, traveling to a new world, romance (which I adore her romances) and scandal!  I’ve been excited for this since it was first announced and loved the chapter sampler I got with my purchase of Soundless.   Okay so I got this post ready last week to be ahead of the game and all but since then somehow I managed to get an ARC and just started it yesterday!  So far I'm loving it but still need it to be out in the world ASAP!

What are you waiting on?  Tell me below what you think of this title and leave a link to your WoW as well so I can check it out!

Top Ten Tuesday: Outside the Comfort Zone

Hello everyone!  Top Ten Tuesday is just how it sounds, a topic is picked and we put our Top Ten for that in a post and share and check out everyone’s answers.  Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

The top today is: Outside the Comfort Zone (recent books I’ve enjoyed)

So I pretty much stick to reading books in my comfort zone since that’s pretty wide open I don’t have much there.  However, I do find that I read a lot of fantasy/sci-fi/dystopian/etc type books and then have bouts were I randomly read a contemporary.  I love contemporary but as I reflect back I don’t read nearly as many and since I’ve got a few of those in my sights I’m going to pick some recent contemporary stories that have made me want to read more!

You Were Here by Cori McCarthy- I finished this just this past Sunday and plan to review it Thursday but I flew through it and really enjoyed the story.
Asleep (review) by Krystal Wade- So this is a type of retelling and a psychological mind play and not the whimsical type of contemporary but it was so good!
Outspoken (review) by Lora Richardson- This was a surprise find for me and I really enjoyed how sweet and uplifting it was.
This Song Will Save Your Life (review) by Leila Sales- I had this book for a while before finally picking it up and it was both sad and happy and filled with some great music.
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens (review) Agenda by Becky Albertalli- A great diverse read.
Eleanor & Park (review) by Rainbow Rowell- It’s Rainbow do I need to say more?  I could have easily picked Fangirl or Attachments as well but this was the most recent read.
Since You’ve Been Gone (review) by Morgan Matson- This title made me think about friendships and also breaking out of ones comfort zone which fits with the theme ;)
Every Day (review) by David Levithan- This book really got to me and made me think about the way we see the world.
Anna and the French Kiss (review) / Lola and the Boy NextDoor (review)/ Isla and the Happily Ever After (review) by Stephanie Perkins- These books were just so sweet and amazing and they just hit me in my happy place!
The DUFF by Kody Keplinger (review)- I really enjoyed this book and hated how the movie took all the things I loved about it and turned them on their head.  I liked that she didn’t fall to ‘oh unduff me please’ attitude.

So those are some contemporary books that have made me want to read more of.  Tell me what you think of my list in the comments below.  Which would you recommend so I know which ones to get first?  Also please link back to your Top Ten as well so I can check out your list and see what I missed!

Blackhearts Event w/ Nicole Castroman & GIVEAWAY!

Hello everyone!  Another Monday, and if your weekend was anything like mine it flew by in the blink of an eye leaving you wanting more.  I'm pretty sure mine has something to do with getting my sleep schedule off but it was worth it.  If you remember I was going to the Blackhearts (review) event in Decatur at the wonderful Little Shop of Stories, they always have such fun events.  I had so much fun there and even made some new friends!  While there I also had a second copy signed to give away to one of you lovely readers along with some bookmarks and post cards so yay stay tuned for that at the bottom.

I end up driving some distance to go to these events which are well worth it but given my fear of being late to anything and the uncertainty of traffic I generally show up an hour or so early.  Though in my defense normally I end up grabbing coffee of dinner with a friend first but this time I was one my own and made new friends like fellow blogger Angela (@AngelaJC94)!  So before the event we have the wonderful chance to just chat with Nicole, who also showed up early, and just discuss.  Also funny thing is I knew she looked familiar, I'd seen her at tons of events before but as a fan and not an author.  Funny how things don't click right away.  Anywho we got to discuss all things Blackhearts, pirates, corsets, and just bookish fun in general which was a real treat.  See it pays to be early!  I also got to get my name tag all ready with my pirate name: Buccaneer Bones Barnacle.
See my name!
After that we all got situated in our seats and had a fun Q&A where she discusses how she came up with the idea for the story, some of her favorite parts, and so on which having already read the book I was completely fascinated by.  I had a ton of questions but as I know not many had already read the book and they could be somewhat spoilery I held off… and I maybe asked them pre-event already.  Nicole also share the story of Blackbeards flag and some of the facts she learns while researching him.  There isn't a lot know about him which just makes her tale of how he turned into the legendary pirate seem like the perfect fit.  She also warned that it is a landlocked tale, a pre-pirate story without the swashbuckling. Though there is hope for another book, because it takes some time to turn from a gentlemen of society to a pirate.  I'm hopeful and keeping my fingers crossed the publishers will see this as well because honestly I just need more!
Sorry for the slight blur apparently it's harder to take photos when laughing!
After that we had the signing line and more jabbering with fellow book nerds.  I even had the chance to meet Roshani Chokshi who has a book on my TBR list coming out in April The Star-Touched Queen which was pretty cool.  The whole night was just a fun experience and just cemented why I love the book community so much.  That's all for the talking.  Now on to the giveaway.  So as I mentioned I got a copy of Blackhearts signed for one lucky winner (US only this time sorry) as well as a couple little swag items.  I'm leaving it open for two weeks, that's 3/7/16.  Take a moment to enter below!

Vicious

Hello happy readers.  It’s Friday!  I know I’m excited.  I have my follow up orthopedic appointment later today where I hope to get good news that my finger is healing properly and then baring any unforeseen issues I will be attending a book event tomorrow at Little Shop of Stories to meet Nicole Castroman who wrote the amazing Blackhearts I read last month and loved (review).  I am going to key up the audiobook and drive, about as exciting as my plans tend to be.  But first today, I have finally finished my review for a book I read a few months back that caught me by surprise, Vicious by V.E. Schwab.

Rating: 4 Stars

I have never read anything by Schwab before but have heard some of her other works praised highly and others practically salivating over her newest series so I was excited to give this one a try.  The story is about Victor and Eli and how they started out as roommates and friends but as powers are discovered, extraordinary abilities change their focus and they become enemies out for their own gain.  Ten years since parting ways, Eli has set out of a course to kill all others with powers, while Victor simply wants revenge.  When two superpowers fight against one another, both villains in their own right, who will be left?

I went into this expecting a sort of anti-hero type book.  That and powers were really all I knew to expect.  What I found was a very interesting story that worked both in the present and in the past from how things were simple and friendly to out to kill.  How two genius level guys ended up with powers and on a war path.  The journey and seeing how things went so quickly from one to the other was brilliant.  The whole story is a smart and twisted idea that leaves you guessing.  Who do you root for?  Who is the hero?  Is anyone?  Are they all equally doomed?  Vicious was just so wicked in the best way.  Drawing you into this feud and revenge plot like it pulled in others.

This ended up being shorter than I intended from all my notes but as I read them I don’t want to share because learning about each power and each detail as the story flushed out and you were given little tidbits here and there made the story.  Additionally, going in not knowing much about it I think made the discoveries all the better for me personally.  So there you have it a great story about an antihero, people with powers, and revenge.  Check it out!  Tell me your thoughts below I’d love to hear who your favorite character was.  Mine was Sydney.  Also if you’ve read other Schwab books I’d love to know what you recommend for me to check out next.

                Until next time…

REVIEW:

Rating:  5 Stars

This book was one I have been anticipating for a while.  I received a digital ARC for review but I also had this book on pre-order for a while so since it came out Tuesday the 16th I’ve had my own copy and I feel I need it in physical form to hold in my hands and add to my shelf!  Described as Sleeping Beauty meets Freddy Kruger, I was so in.  Also things involving mental asylums or institutions just fascinate me because of the history and just how easy it seems it could be for someone there to be put there and labeled crazy when they are sane.  You hear old stories about it being a place to just get rid of people and it seems perfect because who believes a ‘crazy person’ saying they aren’t crazy.  Super creepy and horrifying.  Asleep definitely delivered on the creepy and terrifying aspect of the story.  It balanced the line of doubt throughout the book so beautifully and had me on the edge of my seat.  I read the book in one sitting.  I couldn’t put it down because I had to know what would happen next.

Asleep manages to pack an amazing and thrilling story with real issues of family dynamics, mental illness and physical/psychological abuse.  Rose is really put through the ringer and you instantly feel connected to her.  I know I was caught back and forth questioning things I was reading.  One minute I was sure of my answer the next I was somewhat unsure.  It flows so wonderfully sometimes I didn’t even realize I was questioning what was real or not.  Watching as Rose and Phillip struggle through the ordeal and try to differentiate truth from illness was so darn good.  I could go on for days about it but I don’t want to give much away because that would spoil all the fun.    So go pick up your copy and give it a read and then we can discuss all the goodness in detail!

~Waiting on Wednesday~ Cursed (Beholder #1)

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.  Basically books that are not yet out that we are dying to get our hands on.  This week’s pick is:

Cursed (Beholder #1) by Christina Bauer
Out: 3/29

From Goodreads:
Most days, Elea couldn’t care less about having Necromancer magick.  Who needs to conjure skeletons and spirits when you’re a farm girl?  Elea only uses her powers to speed up chores and scare off suitors.

Everything changes when the evil Necromancer Tsar curses Elea.  Now, Elea has five years left before she burns as a ghost, tortured for all eternity.  They say there’s nothing she can do, but Elea disagrees.  She decides to embrace her Necromancer powers, train as a magickal assassin, and kill the Tsar…All before his curse kills her.  Impossible as it may sound, Elea thinks she has it in the bag, but then everything goes horribly wrong.

That’s when a handsome mage named Rowan steps up to help.  Elea wants an ally, but she doesn’t need all the mixed-up feelings that come along with Rowan’s crooked smile.

An assassination mission is no time to fall in love, but Elea’s heart may have other ideas…

Why I’m Waiting:
Okay this is an Ink Monster book and we all know how I LOVE their other books!  I have read all of them so far and been blown away by them so I’m all for this new series!  So aside from my automatic need for this book, the plot sounds super interesting.  Cursed to have five years before you turn into a ghost and are tortured for all of eternity!  Necromancy, which I’m developing a bit of a fascination with in books as I’ve stumbled into it more and more and I’m liking it.  Oh and magickal assassinations and ill-timed romance.  Yep I need this in my life ASAP!

What are you waiting on?  Tell me below what you think of this title and leave a link to your WoW as well so I can check it out!

Quanta Reset Cover Reveal!

Hello everyone!  Okay so normally I'd have a Top Ten Tuesday post for you but this week I've totally come up blank on anything good for my answers putting way too much thought behind it so since I didn't have anything and I did have a cover reveal and new release information to share I wanted to do that instead!  That said there is some awesome news for today.  We have the new cover for Quanta Reset, the third book in the Shadow Ravens series by Ink Monster which you probably know I LOVE!  I can't wait to get my hands on this book!  Now let's see the cover and find out more of what's in store for Quanta, Altair, and the Shadow Ravens.

Quanta Reset
Lola Dodge
(The Shadow Ravens #3)
Published by: Ink Monster LLC
Publication date: October 4th 2016
Genres: Science Fiction, Young Adult

Quanta has escaped her laboratory prison, but that’s where the good news ends.
Life at the Shadow Ravens’ compound is a disaster. She’s drowning in visions of the dark pasts and darker futures of her fellow Ravens and is plagued by her own panic- inducing memories, but Lady Eva still expects her to “train” and “participate in missions.” Plus, the food tastes like burnt plastic.
The only bright spot is her genetic pairing to the brilliant Altair Orpheus. As their relationship grows, she’s positive that chemicals aren’t the only things drawing them together—although chemistry is definitely involved.
While they test the limits of her game-changing new ability to reset time, word arrives from Eva’s agents: Doctor Nagi is still experimenting with her DNA. If he succeeds in duplicating her power…
Forget the Shadow Ravens. The whole world is toast.

Author Bio:
Lola Dodge is a compulsive traveler, baker, and procrastinator. She earned her BA in English from Stonehill College and MFA in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University--and hasn't stopped moving since. When she's not on the road, Lola spends her time indoors where the sunlight can't melt her, writing or bingeing on anime and cherry soda. She can be summoned in a ritual involving curry, Hello Kitty idols, and a solid chocolate pentagram.
