Why I’m Waiting:

                I’m curious to see what happens after the “happily ever after” type end.  She had it all but it was at the end of a huge war and lots of loss and devastation on both sides.  I’m curious to see how she has managed to build on that and make changes to the world.

Succubus on Top (Georgina Kincaid #2)

                Hello happy readers!  First things first my giveaway for a SIGNED copy of Warcross (Warcross #1) by Marie Lu is still active until 2/2 and can be found here so check it out!  Now I have had lots of good books recently and one book/series that has absorbed so much of my attention as of late is the Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead.  I have at the present just finished the final book yesterday and have all of my reviews ready to go but don't want to overwhelm with the series so I'll spread them out some for a good variety, something I didn't have the will power to do when listening!  That said here are my thoughts on Succubus on Top (Georgina Kincaid #2) by Richelle Mead.  Spoilers for book one, Succubus Blues (review).

Rating: 5 Stars

                So when we left off our succubus Georgina and our favorite author Seth were trying to date.  This is made slightly more complicated by the fact that they can’t do much more than cuddle and briefly kiss or she’ll drain his life force.  Small complication….oh and she has to keep sleeping with other good men as part of her job.  Complicated doesn’t even begin to describe it.  That may be her eternal job but her real day job is at the best local bookstore that she loves and her co-worker and friend, Doug, has been acting very strange.  Given her knowledge and senses she feels there is something demonic afoot and is going to use all her ability to try and figure it out.  Oh and an Incubi friend is in town on a very serious job and he has enlisted her assistance adding just another pot to the fire.

                I was so invested in this book.  I listened to book one back at the start of 2017 but I fell easily back into this as soon as the audiobook started.  The narrator did a fantastic job adding to the story.  I was really invested in this book I don’t know what it was but I was on the edge of my seat through most of it not wanting anything to happen to Georgina on her investigation or more importantly every moment with her and Seth.  I was just in love with it.  I had been trying to think of some type of loophole since the beginning on how they could work out because of all the sexy hot fun times there are in the books, none is as wanted as for her and Seth to have their time!  So as things happen that cause problems for my ship I was not thrilled but was yelling at my phone like it could make it better.  I was very into it.  My heart was racing all the time from start to end and I finished it in a day I do believe. 

“For every bad thing in life, there are more good things to tip the balance.”

                While I do consider the personal development and the relationship between Georgina and Seth a main point of the novel for me I did also enjoy still getting to see my other cast as they worked through some of the issues.  Georgina has some interesting lesser-demon friends and I adore them.  The story is full of humor, action, intrigue, and of course the sexy fun times that she has given her job is literally sex.  Her day job at the book store and watching her balance everything is on point.  I like how this series manages to capture some pretty interesting issues in different ways.  The good and evil of everyone type thing as well as social issues.  Still the writing was on point and the way the narrator hit the witty quips and such had the time flying as I listened.  I could see each of the characters each of them having their own way of speaking and personalities that made it seem so real.  I highly enjoyed this book and dove right back into the world for the next book which I will discuss soon!

Deadly Sweet (The Spellwork Syndicate #1)

                Hello happy readers!  I hope you all are feeling better than me, my sinuses have been making breathing a difficult thing the last few days and I am starting to think I should buy stock in tissues from how many I've gone through.  That said the positive side is I've been getting some reading done so that is always a plus.  Before I dive into that reminder that I have a giveaway going for a SIGNED Copy of Warcross (Warcross #1) by Marie Lu open until 2/2 here.  That said I am excited to review today's title as it was one I was anticipating given the author and the subject matter.  Deadly Sweet (The Spellwork Syndicate #1) by Lola Dodge which I received a copy from NetGalley for an honest review.

Rating:  5 Cherry Pies

                Deadly Sweet is about baking, witches, and everything in between.  Anise loves to bake and using her magic in it but being a witch is a bit hard outside of certain areas where you have to hide what you are.  So when Anise ends up with a chance to study under a long-lost relative who owns the only magic bakery in the US, she is more than excited for the chance.  Upon arriving for her dream apprenticeship she learns that it won't be as simple as she thought.  She has lots to learn from pastry school and oh yeah the last apprentice went missing under mysterious circumstances and there may or may not be a reason for her to have a full time security detail. But for a dream job what's a little danger?

                This book appealed to me on so many levels.  First witches and intrigue are always fun but when you add in baking….magical baking.  I'm all for it.  I love to bake and as I read I may or may not have wrote down some new treats I want to try in the near future.  Also the kitchens described may or may not have stirred up a lot of kitchen envy as well.  There is a clear love for baking in the writing which comes through vividly and made me connect to Anise.  She wants this with all that she is and is willing to go through hell to make it happen.

                Aside from making me hungry and itch to bake (and seriously step up  my decorating game) I enjoyed the way magic was woven in.  There are different types and levels to work with.  I loved how the little things could impact the overall product.  There are still many questions to uncover in this world for sure but it is so full and vibrant.  I love the contrast from growing up moving around to keep their secret and the open town that everyone human and witch are out and about normal as breathing.  I loved seeing Anise adjust from one norm to another and what being open meant for her not only as a witch but as a teenager.  To be yourself and be able to make friends, honest friends, was amazing.  A little assassination attempt here or there is hardly worth giving that up.

                The characters really lit up the page.  I could see Wynn scowling even before I read it after a few encounters.  He is very…mysterious.  There is a lot more I want to know about Wynn and what drives him; more about Shields in general as the series continues but still as little as he said I totally feel I know him.  Same could be said for her new friends and the other ladies of the Syndicate.  It is a small town vibe to it and I enjoyed the way Anise was both welcomed in and accepted while on the same side thinking they know you based on the family name.  I found that very true of a small town.

                Overall this is a great start to a new series and I will be adding it to my auto-buy list for sure because I need to know what happens next.  So much has happened in one book but there are so many characters and stories to explore yet.  Power to be learned and many many more goodies to be baked!  I highly recommend this book…and maybe something for the sweet tooth this will activate!

                This author is an auto-buy for me so that is enough of a reason for me.  That said the summary sounds like something I will love.  So there we go!

~Top Ten Tuesday~ Anticipated Books of 2018

                Hello everyone!  Top Ten Tuesday is just how it sounds, a topic is picked and we put our Top Ten for that in a post and share and check out everyone’s answers.  Top Ten Tuesday is now being hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl.  So the topic for today is "Books I really liked but can't remember anything/much about" but as I scrolled through my Goodreads lists I couldn't come up with anything.  Once I saw the cover and title most everything clicked back into place so I decided to post on a topic from last month that I missed.  Also I posted a giveaway yesterday for a SIGNED copy of Warcross by Marie Lu so check that out here!  

The top ten today is:  Anticipated Books for 2018

Queen of Airand Darkness (The Dark Artifices #3) by Cassandra Clare- This series....I am dying for my best friend to get onto reading book 2 so I can talk about it!

War Storm (Red Queen #4) by Victoria Aveyard- I read book 2 last year and am waiting until closer to the release to dive into book 3 since I heard it has a cliff hanger!

A Reaper atthe Gates (An Ember in the Ashes #3) by Sabaa Tahir- There is a lot happening and I need to know more.  Not a huge fan of the cover changes but still the story!

Legendary (Caraval #2) by Stephanie Garber- Caraval was one of my fav books of last year and I can't wait to get back into the world.

Daughter ofthe Siren Queen (Daughter of the Pirate King #2) by Tricia Levenseller- I have an eARC and I can't wait to dive in next week!

Warcross (Warcross #1) & Signed Copy Giveaway

                Hello happy readers.  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.  I know I did.  I got to go up and visit a fellow blogger friend, Bogdana the Booknerd, where we attended the Marie Lu event and then got to do out Christmas.  This is progress last year we didn't get to do Christmas until March so big steps!  We also got the chance to discuss our plans for revamping our reading group, Perpetual YA Bookworms and hope you will join us this year.  That said the Marie Lu event was one of the main reasons for the trip as she had the release of the new Batman:  Nightwalker (DC Icons #2) but also mid last year she also had the release of Warcross (Warcross #1) both of which I have read and very much enjoyed.  So having finished Warcross before the event and my Twitter poll on which one to get for a giveaway was at a tie I went with Warcross.  The giveaway will be at the bottom of the post with all the details.  First my thoughts on the book itself.

Rating:  5 Stars

                Warcross isn't just a game but a way of life.  The ten year obsession that spans the world is a place of escape from reality.  It's also a way to make a profit.  Hacker struggling to get by Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet illegally.  Like most things the world is competitive and not always easy.  Needing quick cash fast Emika risks a hack of the opening game of the international Warcross Championships, only she accidently glitches herself into the game and becomes an overnight sensation.  Not exactly subtle.  Convinced she's going to jail Emika is surprised when instead she gets a job offer and a wild card spot to this years tournament.  Warcross creator and young billionaire Hideo Tanaka wants her to play but also help discover a security problem, much like the one she exploited when she glitched in.  Swept up in the fame and fortune of this world she quickly uncovers much less glamorous plot that would have major consequences for all of Warcross. 

                Emika is in a difficult spot trying to make it in the world.  Things are not easy and despite how hard she tries her past has put a bit of a damper on her ability to make ends meet.  So after a series of disappointments she makes a split second decision to try and make a play to help herself.  And her anonymity goes out the window as everyone suddenly knows who she is.  So when the Warcross company contacts her….a lot….she isn't surprised.  What does surprise her is the offer to fly her to headquarters and offer her a job rather and punishment for her breach.  Even more amazing is that she gets to talk to, and is on the way to meet, Hideo Tanaka, Warcross creator and boy genius who she has had a crush on since she first started coding.  The job seems straight forward: she'll participate in the game and get all the perks of being a player in the tournament but she is also to work from within to try and find this security breach.  She is on a bounty hunt with much higher stakes and the prize is well over any bounty she's took on before.  But hunting in the shadows is a bit more difficult than she originally thought.

                Emika is really easy to like.  She has had a tough run at things and despite her less than legal actions at times she has a good heart.  But as amazing a character as I found her I say the biggest character in the book was Warcross.  It is not only a game but a way of life.  Glasses you wear all the time as everything comes up with a second layer.  This is so amazing and futuristic but at the same time something that we could end up with a version of in our lifetime which is kind of amazing.  The intricate world that is described just blew me away and for a book that isn't super long this is a huge thing.  One I think Lu manages so well in her books.  So yes all the different worlds within Warcross and what it is capable of just astounds me.  So it's almost like adding in fun and vivid characters like Emika and Hideo are just icing on the cake.  Hideo is a rather complex character himself as he is guarded and a bit closed off but we get to see more about him as we get deeper into the story.  He is very focused and likes to build and fix things. 

                Plus that doesn’t even mention her team in the game.  Because the game itself, her cover, is amazing.  All the press and parties sure but the games themselves.  Training to get up to the proper level with everyone being an unknown she is behind on many areas but while it is a cover she doesn't want to let her team down.  I loved that aspect.  That she was good at it but she did have to train, she wasn't just an instant know it all.  She had to learn the higher levels like others who have been playing on them have done.  Plus while I knew it was virtual and all it didn't take away a single moment of action in the games.  As the attacks happen I was just as invested and concerned if they were really injuring one another because the VR is that intense in the book and really pulls you into it.  Everything is very in the moment. 

                 Another thing I found really compelling in this book is the play on right and wrong.  Lu is great at having characters who are on either side but she also has this amazing talent for walking the grey line.  This is something the characters play with yes, but also the idea of technology.  When one side is fighting to destroy it to understand their actions you learn a different side of things than you normally would have.  I liked this back and forth on if technology was good or bad.  Can we as flawed humans really be in charge of something so powerful?  At the signing Lu mentioned something along those lines as well and I found that to be something the resonated in the book and I have no doubt will continue to be a factor in the sequel. 

                I really enjoyed this book and I think it is my favorite book by the author yet and that is saying something since I haven't disliked a single thing.  Still I am super excited for the sequel which at the moment doesn't have a title, cover, or release date, though I do have my suspicions.  That said I am thrilled to have a SIGNED copy of Warcross to giveaway.  All the ways to enter are in the option below and I'll leave it open until Friday 2/2/18.  Good luck!

This Savage Song (Monsters of Verity #1)

                Hello happy readers! So the event last night was amazing and so was my visit with my friend which is currently still happening. That said I will make this quick as I'm posting from my phone. I'm excited to share my thoughts on this first book in the Schwab book. I'll be hosting a giveaway next week so stay tuned for that.

                This Savage Song is a dark urban fantasy duology following a two young people who have to choose to become heroes or villains, friends or enemies, for their world at stake.  Kate Harker and August Flynn are children of rules of both halves of the divided city.  A city at war in a time where violence creates literal monsters.  Kate is trying to be as ruthless as her father who lets monsters roam to feed on those who don’t pay for his protection.  August ‘s father is on the other side protecting the innocent and he wants to play a bigger part.  He wants to be normal.  To be human.  But he is one of the monsters, a Sunai who can steal your soul.  When a chance comes up for August to play a larger role and go undercover at Kates new school he is ready to help keep an eye on the Harkers.  Until Kate is a smart cookie and figures things out, but not before someone tries to kill them making them flee together.  Neither knows the whole truth or who to trust.

                This is only my second Schwab book but I do enjoy her writing.  She has such a beauty to her writing and the words just flow I did enjoy this one via audiobook which made the almost lyrical aspect even more depth.  Music plays a very big part in the book as that is how Sunai use their power, stealing souls.  I enjoyed learning about the three different types of monsters the world has created with acts of violence.  The Corsai, mindless full of tooth and claw; the Malchai, vampire like, sharp and sly; and the Sunai who are most rare and most human who steal dark souls to survive.  This concept alone, three types of monsters born of violence; that is enough to fill many books. Add in a city at war and you have yourself a show stopper. 

                I liked going back and forth from Kate to August.  I liked how we could get to know each of our leads in their own environment.  Who they are as individuals and then how they interact with others of opposing views/incentives.  Kate is forced to reevaluate her views on monsters when she meets one who is more human than most humans she knows.  August is learning many new things in this world seeing how distorted the view can be from one side.  I liked the interaction between the two and how it had ups and downs throughout.  I enjoyed the push and pull of things and how trust was not instantly given but earned.  The whole idea of what is right or wrong really hits you. 

                I can’t really discuss much of the plot or I feel I would give away too much.  I went into this story mostly blind.  Just that it had music involved and it was about monsters.  The writing was so beautiful and made so many amazing quotes like the following:

               

“The beautiful thing about books was that anyone could open them.”

“It doesn’t matter if you’re monster or human.  Living hurts.”

“It was a cycle of whimpers and bangs, gruesome beginning and bloody ends.”

“I’d rather be able to see the truth than live a lie.”

                These were just a couple that spoke to me.  The character development really made you feel for the characters both good and bad.  It had real depth to it.  Considering this is a rather short book compared to some and it packed a punch.  It had plenty of suspense, drama, and action going on.  Monsters are in the world after all and who knows where you might run into them.  Plus the different political sides of things with how Harker and Flynn choose to run their sides of the city in such drastic ways and what it means for the people.  This is the type of world that has so much potential I am curious to know what will happen next.

                 I have enjoyed the first two books in this series and with the ending of book two I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Finish open series that I’ve started- I have some that I am 1 book into and others I only have 1 book left to finish them.  Not only will this help my one of my challenges but it will let me put to rest some of the open stories in my head.

Review all the books as I finish them- I have a bad habit of sometimes finishing a book and diving right into another, specifically the sequel, and not reviewing it first.  That makes reviewing it difficult as I don’t want my thoughts on the next one to influence me.

Growing my blog- I don’t really know how to do this specifically just make sure that I am staying on schedule and making sure my posts are 100% uniquely me as always.  Oh and not forgetting to post my links over to social media would probably help too….

Work on Instagram- I have an Instagram but I don’t post much there.  I love to browse it and such and look at all the beautiful photos but I just never take the time to get that perfect shot or type in all the #’s (autocorrect kills me here)

Read more books I already own than new buys- Okay I have a library now.  I finally got to create a dedicated library and I love it but I have so many books I got and was super excited to read them but never got around to it.  I know some I have kind of moved away from but others I’m still eager about and just need to go through and pull them out!

Write- I used to write all the time from my own little stories, a couple books I have started and never finished, and fanfiction but in the last year or two I haven’t written anything that wasn’t a review.  I just always find myself doing something else and not putting my time towards it.

Busted

                Hello happy readers!  I am super excited to share with you todays review of a cute fun contemporary.  I missed the signing for this because I had to work and this transition to night shift has kicked my butt to the point I didn’t even get to call in to order a book to be signed to pick up next week.  Sigh.  After finishing this book I am even more disappointed because it was so much fun to read.  The book in question, Busted by Gina Ciocca.  I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this from NetGalley and the publishers for an honest review.

                Marisa was just a normal girl getting some supplies on her way to see her bestie for a night in when she finds her besties boyfriend up to no good.  After some snooping she confirms he is a cheater and somehow she is now being asked to snoop on purpose for an ex-frenemy, Kendall, who has been back in town and might just have changed her ways.  Kendall wants Marisa to spy on her boyfriend, TJ, as he may have a mystery girl, only to find that as she gets to know TJ to try and get the dirt that she is crushing on him and she might be the mysterious girl….yikes.  There is a lot of snooping to be done and it might be more than a two-timing boy that ends up busted.

                This story first and foremost made me think of Veronica Mars which is a show I absolutely adored.  So win there.  Marisa starts out in a solid win from me because she not about to let someone hurt her friend if she can help it.  Her relationship with Charlie (BFF) reminds me in ways of my own relationship with my bestie.  All the characters really come to life as you read the story and find out the dish on each of them.  Digging into the lives and lies of others is not as fun as one might think and it leads to its own set of problems.  I love the dynamic between the different characters and how it is clear that each one has motives and personalities that make the decisions they make seem legit and true to them.  No one is perfectly blameless or flawless. 

                The story is very character driven and moved pretty fast for me.  I liked the drama that came with the story and I was eager to see how things would play out for everyone.  I had a good time reading this and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a light hearted contemporary or has ever dreamed of being a on the sly PI when in school.
