~Can't Wait Wednesday~ These Vengeful Souls (These Vicious Masks #3)

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Wishful Endings.  Waiting on Wednesday has been don for some time so I am switching it up for now!  Basically books that are not yet out that we are dying to get our hands on.  This week’s pick is:

These Vengeful Souls (These Vicious Masks #3) by Tarun Shanker & Kelly Zakas
Out:  2/20

From Goodreads:
England, 1883.  On the run with the grieving Sebastian Braddock, Evelyn wants two things:  to be reunited with her friends, and to get revenge on the evil Captain Goode.  Not only has he misused his and Sebastian’s powers to rack up a terrible death toll, but he’s also completely destroyed any hope of Evelyn or her friends regaining the life they once knew.

Evelyn is determined to make Captain Goode pay for what he’s done, but is her revenge worth risking the lives of Sebastian and her friends? Or is it better to flee the city and focus on staying alive?  And with the Captain spreading lies about Sebastian in an attempt to flush them out of hiding and turn the populace against them, does she even have a choice at all?

Why I’m Waiting:
I have enjoyed the first two books in this series and with the ending of book two I can’t wait to see what happens next.

These Ruthless Deeds (These Vicious Masks #2)

Hello happy readers!  Its drawing ever closer to ApollyCon and I am beyond stoked!  I have my books stacked and waiting to be sticky-noted and packed.  I’m not going to be able to read as many books by authors attending as I had hoped but I have done pretty well.  Today I’m going to share my thoughts and feels on a new release that comes out tomorrow and an ARC I was thrilled to get approved for on NetGalley, These Ruthless Deeds (These Vicious Masks #2) by Tarun Shanker and Kelly Zekas.

Rating:  5 Stars

I have been waiting for this book since the end of These Vicious Masks (review) last year.  It had been a while for me and many books in between so I went back and read my old review and skimmed the end again to make sure I had all my facts straight.  It was so easy to dive back into this world of powers and upper England society.  We start out running, Evelyn still in pain over losing her sister Rose, is working to find other gifted people like herself and keep them safe starting with a telekinetic her old tutor knows.  Things don’t go smoothly and they come face to face with the Society of Aberrations, the same society that the evil doctor worked for.  Not a great first impression.  They try to convince Evelyn and her friends that the doctor was rogue and they were really all about what she is, finding and helping those like them and making the world better.  They offer much from repairing her reputation, restoring her family’s fortunes, and the like she wants to believe them.  To be part of something so good, but she is still leery that it is too good to be true and there must be something more sinister beneath the surface.

Evelyn has really embraced her abilities and the whole new world of powers as a whole.  She is trying to be the best that she can be, what she things Rose would have wanted her to do.  She is still grieving but still things around her keep moving.  She is unable to tell everyone about her ability or what really happened to Rose or risk being thrown in the asylum.  She is a strong character who really moves forward with gusto.  She doesn’t always make the smartest choices, there is one in particular that has serious consequences I still haven’t recovered from I don’t approve of but she is true to who she is at each step.  She grows throughout the series thus far but doesn’t magically change into a different person it’s a development that I like.  Mr. Kent, the good friend who has feelings for her is so much fun to read.  I love when they are together their banter is just so on point.  He has some of the best lines and moments throughout the book and constantly had me laughing.  On the flip side of the romantic feelings we have dark and moody Mr. Braddock who has a horrible ability in making those he is near or touch ill or die.  Yep not a winner on powers.  He is such a good guy with a good heart who is plagued by this power and the devastation it causes.  I like him well enough but I do prefer Mr. Kent.  We also get to meet several others with different powers which was pretty fun seeing how they came into play.  Some we love others we don’t care so much for.

Book two is by far set at a faster pace and it really drives you through your reading in the best way.  They are constantly on the move between secret missions, training, snooping, and even the society obligations.  There is never a dull moment and the dialogue is on point.  The constant game of who can you trust really keeps the suspense high.  At one point I stopped and made a note to myself where I was at and my prediction about it being important and this whole theory from one little part so I could see if I was right.  I was in part but I went deep in my own thought process there and I look back and love that it made me so curious.  I’m still holding out that part of it will play in later.

I really enjoyed this installment and all the action packed feels.  I can’t wait for the next book in the series because the ending...well it left me with those feels.  Like TONS of them.  Like I re-read the ending several times hoping to see something that could fix what broke my heart but so far not looking good.  But we shall see.

                Until next time…

~Waiting on Wednesday~ These Ruthless Deeds (These Vicious Masks #2)

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.  Basically books that are not yet out that we are dying to get our hands on.  This week’s pick is:

These Ruthless Deeds (These Vicious Masks #2) by Tarun Shanker & Kelly Zekas
Out: 3/14

From Goodreads:
England, 1883.  Still recovering from the loss of her beloved sister, Evelyn is determined to use her powers to save other gifted people from those who would harm them.  But when her rescue of a young telekinetic girl goes terribly wrong, Evelyn finds herself indebted to a secret society devoted to recruiting and protecting people like Evelyn and her friends.

As she follows the Society’s orders, healing the sick and embarking on perilous recruitment missions, Evelyn sees her problems disappear.  Her reputation is repaired, her friends are provided for, and her parents are newly wealthy.  She reunites with the dashing Mr. Kent and recovers the reclusive Mr. Braddock (who has much less to brood over now that the Society can help him to control his dangerous power).  But Evelyn can’t help fearing the Society is more sinister than it appears…

Why I’m Waiting:
I read the first book, These Vicious Masks (review), last year as an ARC so I’ve had even longer to wait for this one.  I’m ready to learn more about Evelyn and this Society and what sinister motives they may have.  I had a great time reading book one and want to know more about this world.

These Vicious Masks

Hello everyone!  Before today's review I wanted to quickly mention that my giveaway for a SIGNED copy of The Rose Society by Marie Lu is coming to a close and ends tomorrow (the 29th) so don't forget to get your entries in here.  That said today I am reviewing a book I received as a digital ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.  The book is, These Vicious Masks by Tarun Shanker and Kelly Zekas and it is out February 9th.  I was first interested in this book because of the cover, come on it has a masquerade mask on it and I LOVE them.  I have a minor collection of them myself!  So that drew me in and the title combined I wanted to know more and was thrilled to be granted a copy for early review.

Rating: 5 Stars

These Vicious Masks is pitched as Jane Austen meets X-men in a paranormal romance adventure in Victorian London.  We follow Evelyn who isn't really interested in society and it's rules but instead wishes to travel.  Her sister Rose, vanishes one night under mysterious circumstances and against the wishes of her family she travels to London to find her.  She is accompanied by her good friend Mr. Kent but along the way realize the reclusive Mr. Braddock is as well, though he spins tales that they have healing powers.  She soon learns the man is not as insane as she thought as she discovers a new world around her full of people with extraordinary gifts, which means her sister is in even more danger than she thought.

I admit to never having read an Austen book myself but I do really enjoy the movies and I love the X-men so I think it seems like a fit.  I also felt like there was a bit of a Holmes vibe as well as the search for her sister played out as well.  I did enjoy Evelyn, and not just because of her name.  Evelyn is very candid with her dislike for the way of things much rather wanting to go travel and see the world than try to find a husband and be a perfect wife.  She and her sister started nursing, but only as a hobby as it was "unseemly" to have a true profession despite her sisters complete love of it.  I loved the bond between sisters.  Their bond was very clear from the start and the way they talked together it brought that bond out which was a real asset to the story as Evelyn goes in search of her.

The other main characters, our two male leads as it were, Mr. Kent and Mr. Braddock were delightful.  From the start I enjoyed the friendship between Evelyn and Mr. Kent and I could see the possibility for more there.  More I enjoyed the way they acted around one another with such free banter allowing Evelyn to be herself.  Then you add in the mysterious and stand-offish Mr. Braddock.  He does not make the best impression several times over and seems a bit insane but he does help her not only in her search but in understanding her powers and getting to know him bit by hard won bit was fascinating and he shared a connection with Evelyn.  Yes while there was some romantic prospects about the story was more focused on the adventure and mystery of it all.  Finding Rose.  Finding her and discovering what it is the man who took her wants and how to stop him.

These Vicious Masks was a thrilling tale and I didn't want to put it down when I started.  I wanted to know what would happen next not only in the search but between the characters and their adventures.  Oh and let us not forget trying to do all of this and not ruin any reputations in polite society.  I would not have survived in that era, because frankly I'm of the mind that I don't care what anyone thinks of me, I do me and you do you.  But I will admit the way for which people talked back then (from my limited knowledge of books and movies) was portrayed in a way that always makes me smile!  Just the right amount plus our modern and stubborn female ahead of her times.  The story was full of plot on its own but the powers added that extra push to make it awesome.  I thought they were pretty well thought out powers and I loved the diversity in them and how some were great while others were more of a curse, not all gumdrops.

Overall I really enjoyed the story and I can't wait for more.  It had its moments of predictability but also some twists you don't see coming keeping it nice and fresh.  I'd love to hear your thoughts on this story in the comments below.  I have already read it but have also pre-ordered myself a physical copy to have on my shelf!  Are you excited for this book to come out next month, what part intrigues you most?  Already read it, what did you think?  Let's discuss below!

                Until next time…

~Waiting on Wednesday~ These Vicious Masks

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.  Basically books that are not yet out that we are dying to get our hands on.  This week’s pick is:

These Vicious Masks by Tarun Shanker & Kelly Zekas
Out:  2/9

From Goodreads:
Jane Austen meets X-Men in this gripping and adventure-filled paranormal romance set in Victorian London.

England, 1882.  Evelyn is bored with society and its expectations.  So when her beloved sister, Rose, mysteriously vanishes, she ignores her parents and travels to London to find her, accompanied by the dashing Mr. Kent.  But they’re not the only ones looking for Rose.  The reclusive, young gentleman Sebastian Braddock is also searching for her, claiming that both sisters have special healing powers.  Evelyn is convinced that Sebastian must be mad, until she discovers that his strange tales of extraordinary people are true—and that her sister is in graver danger than she feared.

Why I’m Waiting:
I was sold on X-Men adventure-filled paranormal romance in Victorian London.  Now I’m not normally one for time/historical books in general (probably why I’ve never read Jane Austen) but I do love the paranormal aspect.  Also it makes me think of the Infernal Devices series so win/win there.  It sounds like a mystery, discovering powers and secrets and all but also finding her sister.  I look forward to it.  I also  received an ARC of this and plan to get to it this week all things permitting!  Plus the cover is awesome!  I love masquerade masks!
