The Carver: Review & Blog Tour!

Hello happy readers!    So today I am participating in a fun blog tour for a book I was super excited to dive into.  I received an early copy to read for an honest review today so here goes.  The #roadtripwithpeterpan has begun!  THECARVER is a young adult fairy tale retelling that takes you on a road trip with an adult Peter Pan and the children of some of your favorite fairy tale characters.  Together, they must find out what happened to their missing family members as secrets of the old world and the new are revealed, with only Pinocchio’s carvings to guide the way.  You can get your copy of THE CARVER by Jacob Devlin on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

About the Book:
THE GIRL IN THE RED HOOD has been looking for her mother for six months, searching from the depths of New York’s subways to the heights of its skyscrapers…

THE PRINCE looks like he’s from another time entirely, or maybe he’s just too good at his job at Ye Old Renaissance Faire…

THE ACTRESS is lighting up Hollywood Boulevard with her spellbinding and strikingly convincing portrayal of a famous fairy.  Her name may be big, but her secrets barely fit in one world…

Fifteen-year-old Crescenzo never would have believed his father’s carvings were anything more than “stupid toys.”  All he knows is a boring life in an ordinary Virginia suburb, from which his mother and best friend have been missing for years.  When his father disappears next, all Crescenzo has left is his goofy neighbor, Pietro, who believes he’s really Peter Pan and that Crescenzo is the son of Pinocchio.  What’s more:  Pietro insists that they can find their loves ones by looking to the strange collection of wood figurines Crescenzo’s father left behind.

With Pietro’s help, Crescenzo sets off on an adventure to unite the real life counterparts to his figurines.  It’s enough of a shock that they’re actually real, but the night he meets the Girl in the Red Hood, dark truths burst from the past.  Suddenly, Crescenzo is tangled in a nightmare where magic mirrors and evil queens rule, and where everyone he loves is running out of time.

About the Author:

When Jacob Devlin was four years old, he would lounge about in Batman pajamas and make semi-autobiographical picture books about an adventurous python names Jake the Snake.  Eventually, he traded his favorite blue crayon for a black pen, and he never put it down.  When not reading or writing, Jacob loves practicing his Italian, watching stand-up comedy, going deaf at rock concerts, and geeking out at comic book conventions.  He does most of these things in southern Arizona.

Review:
 Rating: 4.5 Stars

This book was calling to be I LOVE Once Upon a Time and the whole fairytale retellings and reimagineings and such but the combo of interacting different stories together is a favorite.  So to see some like Pinocchio who I don’t know much about was intriguing but to follow children of characters we know it creates a whole new level.  Plus I’ve kind of really been digging Peter Pan lately.

The POV shifts as we follow along Peter Pan, Enzo, and Rosana for the majority of the story but also with our villain of sorts and several others to really give you a feel for the story and the world.  The story also is told in different times, we see things in the present in both worlds, three years prior and even twenty five years prior.  Everything is weaved together nicely and really keeps you wondering and wanting to turn the page for what’s more.  What happened then that would lead to what you know of the present? So much fun.

Enzo, the Carvers son, Pinocchio’s kid.  All your life is simple and normal then all of a sudden it’s one hit after another until you are left with the most insane possibility of them all.  Fairy tales are real and you’re on a road trip with a grown up Peter Pan to save everyone you love.  Why not?  Peter was also rather interesting in the story, seeing the way he is both grown up but also still the same character I remember from my childhood a true and literal version of a man child in many ways.  He has the heart of a child but he’s also an adult with a child of his own and a job and adulting happening.  We got a bit of backstory on most and with it shifting to their perspective at different points we “knew” how they felt and who they are.

The overall story with the quests and missions to accomplish all while uncovering the facts.  It was a fun tale that had both light and dark moments mixed in.  I had a lot of fun reading this story and I look forward to more.  I don’t really want to give too much away because figuring out who people are at times is half the fun!  I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

                Until next time…

REVIEW:

Rating:  5 Stars

This book was one I have been anticipating for a while.  I received a digital ARC for review but I also had this book on pre-order for a while so since it came out Tuesday the 16th I’ve had my own copy and I feel I need it in physical form to hold in my hands and add to my shelf!  Described as Sleeping Beauty meets Freddy Kruger, I was so in.  Also things involving mental asylums or institutions just fascinate me because of the history and just how easy it seems it could be for someone there to be put there and labeled crazy when they are sane.  You hear old stories about it being a place to just get rid of people and it seems perfect because who believes a ‘crazy person’ saying they aren’t crazy.  Super creepy and horrifying.  Asleep definitely delivered on the creepy and terrifying aspect of the story.  It balanced the line of doubt throughout the book so beautifully and had me on the edge of my seat.  I read the book in one sitting.  I couldn’t put it down because I had to know what would happen next.

Asleep manages to pack an amazing and thrilling story with real issues of family dynamics, mental illness and physical/psychological abuse.  Rose is really put through the ringer and you instantly feel connected to her.  I know I was caught back and forth questioning things I was reading.  One minute I was sure of my answer the next I was somewhat unsure.  It flows so wonderfully sometimes I didn’t even realize I was questioning what was real or not.  Watching as Rose and Phillip struggle through the ordeal and try to differentiate truth from illness was so darn good.  I could go on for days about it but I don’t want to give much away because that would spoil all the fun.    So go pick up your copy and give it a read and then we can discuss all the goodness in detail!

Quanta Reset Cover Reveal!

Hello everyone!  Okay so normally I'd have a Top Ten Tuesday post for you but this week I've totally come up blank on anything good for my answers putting way too much thought behind it so since I didn't have anything and I did have a cover reveal and new release information to share I wanted to do that instead!  That said there is some awesome news for today.  We have the new cover for Quanta Reset, the third book in the Shadow Ravens series by Ink Monster which you probably know I LOVE!  I can't wait to get my hands on this book!  Now let's see the cover and find out more of what's in store for Quanta, Altair, and the Shadow Ravens.

Quanta Reset
Lola Dodge
(The Shadow Ravens #3)
Published by: Ink Monster LLC
Publication date: October 4th 2016
Genres: Science Fiction, Young Adult

Quanta has escaped her laboratory prison, but that’s where the good news ends.
Life at the Shadow Ravens’ compound is a disaster. She’s drowning in visions of the dark pasts and darker futures of her fellow Ravens and is plagued by her own panic- inducing memories, but Lady Eva still expects her to “train” and “participate in missions.” Plus, the food tastes like burnt plastic.
The only bright spot is her genetic pairing to the brilliant Altair Orpheus. As their relationship grows, she’s positive that chemicals aren’t the only things drawing them together—although chemistry is definitely involved.
While they test the limits of her game-changing new ability to reset time, word arrives from Eva’s agents: Doctor Nagi is still experimenting with her DNA. If he succeeds in duplicating her power…
Forget the Shadow Ravens. The whole world is toast.

Author Bio:
Lola Dodge is a compulsive traveler, baker, and procrastinator. She earned her BA in English from Stonehill College and MFA in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University--and hasn't stopped moving since. When she's not on the road, Lola spends her time indoors where the sunlight can't melt her, writing or bingeing on anime and cherry soda. She can be summoned in a ritual involving curry, Hello Kitty idols, and a solid chocolate pentagram.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

AUTHOR. CHICKEN (AND DOG) LOVER. MOTHER. WIFE. DREAMER.

I’m happily married to the love of my life (don’t gag) and raising three beautiful children in the gorgeous state of Virginia. We live just outside Washington, D.C., and every day I wake up to find myself stuck in traffic trying to get there.

The horrid commute gives me plenty of time to zone out and think about my characters in full, brilliant details (I’m a safe driver; don’t worry). Stories give me a way to forget about the sometimes smelly strangers sitting next to me on the fifty mile trek into town (I pick up hitchhikers every day. True story. Check out www.slug-lines.com if you don’t believe me).

I’ve been a part of organized hitchhiking for nearly fifteen years, but that’s just one small aspect of my oh-so-large life. When I’m not working, commuting, or chasing after my three children (four if you count the man), you can usually find me outside talking to my chickens like they’re the cutest things in the world (they are), or training my amazing dogs how to herd said chickens (which they love), or curled up on the sofa with a good book (why can’t that be 100% of the time?).

I hope you love my stories (or just like them a little; that would be okay, too). And I hope that one day you find your passion, because there’s nothing in life better than doing what you love while surrounded by people you love.

<3 Krystal
