REVIEW:

Rating:  5 Stars

This book was one I have been anticipating for a while.  I received a digital ARC for review but I also had this book on pre-order for a while so since it came out Tuesday the 16th I’ve had my own copy and I feel I need it in physical form to hold in my hands and add to my shelf!  Described as Sleeping Beauty meets Freddy Kruger, I was so in.  Also things involving mental asylums or institutions just fascinate me because of the history and just how easy it seems it could be for someone there to be put there and labeled crazy when they are sane.  You hear old stories about it being a place to just get rid of people and it seems perfect because who believes a ‘crazy person’ saying they aren’t crazy.  Super creepy and horrifying.  Asleep definitely delivered on the creepy and terrifying aspect of the story.  It balanced the line of doubt throughout the book so beautifully and had me on the edge of my seat.  I read the book in one sitting.  I couldn’t put it down because I had to know what would happen next.

Asleep manages to pack an amazing and thrilling story with real issues of family dynamics, mental illness and physical/psychological abuse.  Rose is really put through the ringer and you instantly feel connected to her.  I know I was caught back and forth questioning things I was reading.  One minute I was sure of my answer the next I was somewhat unsure.  It flows so wonderfully sometimes I didn’t even realize I was questioning what was real or not.  Watching as Rose and Phillip struggle through the ordeal and try to differentiate truth from illness was so darn good.  I could go on for days about it but I don’t want to give much away because that would spoil all the fun.    So go pick up your copy and give it a read and then we can discuss all the goodness in detail!

Hello everyone!  Today I'm taking part in a release tour for a new book, Elementals:  The Prophecy of Shadows by Michelle Madow.  I previously read and reviewed her title Remembrance (here) and enjoyed it and was looking forward to trying out this new series as well.  I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review.  So check out some information on this title, the author, my full review, and then at the bottom a giveaway that is being hosted by Michelle herself!

Title: Elementals: The Prophecy of Shadows
Author: Michelle Madow
Publisher: Dreamscape Publishing
Release Date: January 26, 2016
Series: Elementals #1
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Format: eBook and paperback
ISBN: 2940152448849

Filled with magic, thrilling adventure, and sweet romance, Elementals: The Prophecy of Shadows is the first in a new series that fans of Percy Jackson and The Secret Circle will love!

When Nicole Cassidy moves from sunny Georgia to gloomy New England, the last thing she expects is to learn that her homeroom is a cover for a secret coven of witches. Even more surprisingly … she’s apparently a witch herself. Despite doubts about her newfound abilities, Nicole is welcomed into this ancient circle of witches and is bedazzled by their powers—and, to her dismay, by Blake—the school’s notorious bad-boy.

Girls who get close to Blake wind up hurt. His girlfriend Danielle will do anything to keep them away, even if she must resort to using dark magic. But the chemistry between Blake and Nicole is undeniable, and despite wanting to protect Nicole from Danielle’s wrath, he finds it impossible to keep his distance.

When the Olympian Comet shoots through the sky for the first time in three thousand years, Nicole, Blake, Danielle, and two others in their homeroom are gifted with mysterious powers. But the comet has another effect—it opens the portal to the prison world that has contained the Titans for centuries. After an ancient monster escapes and attacks Nicole and Blake, it’s up to them and the others to follow the clues from a cryptic prophecy so that they can save their town … and possibly the world.

Review:
Rating: 4 Stars

I didn't know a whole lot about this story going in just the summary.  I have shamefully not yet read the Percy Jackson books, though I plan to correct that in 2016, I did read The Secret Circle (or at least the original three books) and enjoyed them.  Plus I did enjoy the Percy movies and love Greek mythology, probably the only part in history class I ever paid attention to.  So I was ready to dive in.  Our MC Nicole is moved from her home she knew and loved to a completely new place where she is alone.  That sucks and from the start you feel for her, I know as a Navy brat growing up and moving all the time it always sucked going someplace new and leaving all your friends and having to make new ones.  Day one new school going into class and something crazy happens, the teacher starts to do magic and tries to convince her she's a witch.  While she thinks everyone in the class has lost it there is nothing to do but sit through it.  Until she starts to feel the magic and starts to believe them.

Now the class is full of the usual suspects you find in every school and most welcome her into the coven, though Danielle is a bit hostile.  Though she doesn't like anyone whom looks at her man, Blake, and has been known to break the law using dark magic to mark her turf.  Still knowing this Blake and Nicole seem to pull together despite everything.  She is a bit cray, like mean girls on crack level crazy possessive.  While a large part of the story does seem to focus on the triangle there in our group we also have Chris and Kate whom I enjoyed.  Kate was more of the level by the book gal and Chris is fun and energetic and made me laugh several times.  I did find the insta-connection to be a bit on the nose but as this is a story with magic and prophecy you can get away with some things, magic is a crazy thing after all.  I did even enjoy that Nicole didn't want to get involved or even like him based on him having a girlfriend, not that she was scared but that she didn't want to be that girl that went after a taken guy.

The hormones were a bit amped up and I did feel maybe a bit too much Secret Circle vibe in some parts and it does have some clichés but overall I really enjoyed the story.  Everything is fast paced and constantly moving.  You fly right through from one thing to the next and while it was predictable it was still fun and that is what I wanted.  I did really enjoy the take on witches and how they have their powers.  I'm ready to continue on with the series and know more about where our group ends up and how things progress because the end got kind of dark with lots of things.  I have hopes that the sequel which already has a title, cover, and release date will improve on a good start.

I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.  Don't forget to take a moment and enter the giveaway as well!

excerpt (1)

Chapter One

I am so late.

My heart beats at double speed while I rush up the staircase to the Ryder mansion. After pulling open the fancy wooden door, I step inside a large and empty foyer. Well, it’s almost empty.

The President of Purgatory is waiting for me. Not good.

Even worse, her mouth is pressed into a thin and frustrated line. No question why she’s unhappy. My lecture on Magic Across The After-Realms should’ve started twenty minutes ago.

“Portia, you’re finally here,” she sighs. “We were getting frantic.”

The President’s known for being tough on crime, graft, and well, everything really. But she’s also my grandmother. When it comes to family, Gram’s a softie who worries like crazy. I should know, being a softie myself. I give her a quick peck on the cheek. “So sorry, Gram. I got caught up.”

Gram’s tail sways warily over her right shoulder. No shock, there. Every quasi-demon in Purgatory has a tail. Gram’s variety is long and black with an arrowhead-shaped end and a mind of its own.

Currently, that mind totally suspects that I’m up to something.
Good suspicion, actually.

“What are you working on this time?” asks Gram. “Is it dangerous magic? Please tell me you’re being safe.”

“No, it’s not dangerous at all,” I say.

Which isn’t entirely true.

My cheeks redden with guilt, but I can’t exactly admit that I was up all night trying to track Void demons by casting spells with an enchanted canopic jar. It’s super-tricky stuff. I could’ve ended up with a Void demon in my living room, and I’m not what you call battle-hardy.

Thank you for speaking with me.  I'm trying not to fangirl too much, though I'm not much good at it.  I gush about this series and Ink Monsters different series as a whole since I first read Angelbound and Becoming Alpha what seems like forever ago.  Anywho thanks again I guess I'll ask questions now ;)
Aw, shucks!  You made my day!

What are three things on your bucket list?
Good question!  One.  Quit my day job and write full time.  Two.  Visit the pyramids.  Three.  Support my son into becoming the best little guy that he can be.

How did you first get into writing?
I started telling 'my stories' as soon as I could talk.  By the time I hit first grade, the nuns had to set aside story hour for me at the end of the day so I wouldn't interrupt class anymore! To this day, stories are going on in my head all the time.  My Aunt was a writer, so she steered me in that direction from an early age.  Guess I was lucky she didn't work in an asylum, because I sometimes wonder where my behavior could have sent me otherwise!

What inspired the world of Angelbound?
Angelbound came right out of my experiences working at Microsoft and founding a global investment program for our small reseller partners.  I was having a great time kicking ass, taking names, and building the program across multiple groups.  At the time, people kept warning me about becoming a target—back then, it was dangerous to build something across groups—but I was having such fun, I didn't care.  Myla's voice is exactly how I sound when I'm in the zone on a good work battle.  I do fist bumps, happy dances, the whole nine yards.  I even sing little songs on calls when I have good news.  Ba-ba-ba-bah-bah-bah-BAAAAAAH!  I had people search me out 'just to meet me,' and I thought this side of myself might be fun to make into a character.

So you know, I did get the backlash from a new boss who wanted me and my program gone.  He got what he wanted.  Today, I still work with Microsoft but as a partner.  I'm going out to Remond next week to meet with the VP of Global Alliances.  Myla FTW!

Purgatory sure is full of different creatures that make sure there is never a dull moment.  Briefly tell us a little about the main ones we'll be focusing on in Portia.  Void demons, Quasi-demon, Thrax, and Dragon Emperor.
Ooooh, I love this question!  I do Pinterest boards to inspire my world building.  I've linked the appropriate ones below.

Void demons are nasty goop monsters who eat the Firmament, which is the magical network that keeps Purgatory, Heaven, Hell and everything else connected.

Quasi-demons run Purgatory.  They are mostly human with a little demon DNA that manifests as a tail and as a power across one of the seven deadly sins.  Portia's mother is quasi.  Since Portia has a little demon blood in her as well, that makes her quasi, too.

Thrax are demon fighters who are part angel and part human.  They live far below the Earth's Surface in Antrum.  Portia's father is thrax.

Tempest is the Emperor of the Furor, a race of dragon shifters who have special powers over the deadly sins of lust and wrath.  Tempest is known for constantly taking new lovers.  However, those closest to him have recently noticed a change in the Emperor.  Is he getting ready to chose his Rhana, what dragons call their life mate?  Or has the choice already been made long ago?

Dragons.  There s a dragon on the cover and in the summary.  How did you decide on the mythology of your dragons?
OMG.  This is something I spent a ton of time on and then, it got like two paragraphs in the book!  The way my mind works, it just turns over a world 24-7 while I'm in a book.  I can't shut it off if I tried!  Once I get on a roll, I use Pinterest to help me visualize things.  For Portia, the dragons are organized into different tribes.  There are glassdragons, water dragons, butterfly-sized dragons, and dragons who craft gems in order to gain power over magic.  And a ton more.

We started out with Myla.  Now we have progressed forward jumping a bit forward with each book moving to the children.  What made you decide to jump forward and from Myla as primary?
This is all Tempest's fault.  He started showing up in scenes in book 2 and would not get out of my head.  He appeared as this fully realized character and I fell in love with him.  I was like, hey now!  You're who and you want what?!  He was even already buds with Maxon and had a thing for Portia.  Now that Tempest has his book and can shut the f*ck up, I'm thinking about going back and doing another book in Myla's voice between Scala and Armageddon.  It would cover their wedding and all that good stuff.  It's tentatively called Acca and I should have a release date soon.

The Igni predicted Portia and even whispered her name to her mom, did her parents have any say in her name?
No, they had no say whatsoever in Portia's name.  Kind of like how I felt when Tempest started showing up J From a story perspective, the ingi got in cahoots with Verus and came up with the name together.

Also how did you as the author or the Igni come up with the name?
From a writer side, I like the idea of Portia and Tempest.  Her character is a 'port in the storm' of Tempest's life.  Can't say more without giving anything away!

What do you want readers to take away from your books?
Oh, if you have a good time and can escape from reality for a while, then I'm a happy camper.  I love it when people tell me that my books inspire them to go out and kick ass in some way, too!

Do you have any new projects coming up?
Yes, I'm working on a new series called Beholder.  The first book, Cursed, is due out in March 2016.

How can your readers get in touch? (Links provided just below)

So now that you know all the awesome reasons you should be reading this series I want to share with you my thoughts on the newest edition.  I was beyond excited when this one became available on NetGalley.  Like out of town download the kindle app on my phone and stayed up all night at my friends not sleeping but reading.  Yep. That is how good.

Rating: 5 Stars

As if it wasn't clear I LOVED this book.  Meeting Portia and seeing a different type of character was super interesting.  She is kick-ass no doubt, but she is a different kind of kick-ass.  She's not as battle ready as the rest of her family but she is fierce in a way of handling the adversity she has been plagued with from birth and not standing around waiting for things to happen to her but fighting to challenge them.  And of course she's not completely unequipped in battle, she is the daughter of Myla and Lincoln after all.  Oh and then there is Tempest.  I liked him in Maxon sure, he was intriguing and such but now to have so much of him is even better!  I can see what Christina was compelled by this dragon.  He's a charming and mysterious bad ass with a soft side that makes you want to sin.

There is more magic in this story that previous ones and we also learn more about the world as a whole, how all the realms work and are connected.  The story is a roller coaster that doesn't stop moving.  There is constantly something happening, never a dull moment, probably why I couldn’t put the book down to sleep.  You are instantly pulled into the world, into Portia's destiny, the salvation of all the realms.  There is something in the story for everyone.

Portia and Tempest work together, both new to one another and figuring the other out but still working together on the quest.  I liked how the story built.  There is some insta-attraction, but come on both parties have part lust demon in them and are sexy that was bound to happen but the connection builds from just attraction which is something I loved discovering with them.  Plus did I not mention he can turn into a full on dragon!  How awesome is that?  I would totally want him on my side.  Even when there was some vague answers thrown about courtesy of our favorite angel of visions, seriously I think she likes talking in riddles, everything blended into the larger story.  I also love how the characters I fell in love with from the first book are still active and present in the story and not just a foot note.

That's all I have to say on it.  I highly suggest picking up Portia, the whole series really because they are all such great fun to read.  I hope you all have enjoyed these fun events I know I have.  Fangirl central being able to interview authors whose books I loved, hello.  I only have one more thing for you today and that is the giveaway just below.  Take a moment and enter you could get some awesome goodies!

blurb (1)

Just because Quanta can see the future doesn’t mean she can change it. She’s spent most of her life imprisoned, feeding her captors information to keep herself alive, but she’s finally reached the endgame and her death creeps closer by the moment.
The son of two senators, Altair Orpheus leads a life of privilege that provides the perfect cover for his side job: working with the rebel Shadow Ravens to undermine the ruling Seligo government. Everything is running like clockwork until he crosses paths with Quanta. As he watches her deftly maneuver through life in a perverse prison, his plastic heart melts. A jailbreak would be suicide, but Tair is willing to sacrifice everything to give her a chance at happiness.
Now Quanta senses a terrifying new future brewing. She and Tair are bound together, but every image of them kissing, snuggling, and acting knee-weakeningly happy is balanced by a much darker possibility. They’ll be picture perfect together, but only until time rips them apart. How can she follow her heart when she’s seen how their love plays out?

excerpt (1)

Altair's POV

Mother smiled like a cat, full of ambition and smugness.  "Someone wants to meet you."

Someone? Suddenly, I knew where this was going.  "Mother—"

"There are the Astors."  Mother gave a demure wave and started gliding toward a trio standing near an ice sculpture.  Her fingers clamped my arm, dragging me along.  Father walked on my other side, sandwiching me in place.

No way to run without making a scene.  Senator Astor and her husband stood waiting with their daughter.

                A set-up.

My free hand bunched into a fish, but I tucked it into my pocket.  I couldn’t make a mistake in front of this audience.

Mother exchanged greetings, then made a sweeping gesture.  "This is my son, Altair.  Altair, this is Layla Astor."

Layla's blonde hair tumbled in artful curls and braids.  She wore tasteful neutral makeup that emphasized her full lips and emerald green eyes, but a hint of darker eyeliner smudged like a leftover from some previous night's debauchery; that was half of what I needed to know to escape the conversation.

And I would escape.  I had no interest in these shallow romances meant to gain my family position.

"It's nice to meet you, Altair.  I knew your sister at academy."  And that was why Cass had been invited.  Some common bond to me to a potential future mate.

Good thing Cass had stayed home.  She'd hate the situation as much as I did.

The girl extended her arm, flashing her Green Helix and I couldn’t avoid the handshake.  "Likewise."  Layla's rough fingertips gave me the last clue I needed.  Calluses from playing an instrument.  Between that and the eyeliner, I had an excellent guess at how to get rid of her.  Rather than sell her out in front of her parents, I offered her an arm.  "I was just about to admire the ice sculptures.  Would you care to join me?"

"I'd love to."  She smiled and placed delicate fingertips on my arm.

Our parents grinned conspiratorial smiles as we strolled away.  No doubt they'd already picked a wedding date.  I waited until we were out of modified earshot to speak.  "How upset would your family be if I mentioned that you plan in a band?"

"Very."  Layla tenses, and her expression and tone shifted from vapid politeness to shrewd consideration.  "Not that you should know."

I shrugged.  "I won't say a thing as long as you don't press and engagement."

"Thank God."  Layla shuddered.  "Our mothers schemed this one.  I thought you were in on it."

I grinned.  I didn't often stumble onto others faking their way through Helix life, but every so often an ally dropped in my lap.  "Should we small talk for a few minutes and then pretend to offend each other?"

Layla pressed her lips together, eyes me up and down.  "If you're up to it, I have a better suggestion."

"Oh?"  I handed her a drink taken from a passing tray.  our parents still watched from across the room.

"Let's meet for coffee.  We could draw this out for months."

"A faux courtship?"  It had promise, although there were certainly risks.

"You're the first guy they've set me up with who's not a self centered ass."  Layla's mischievous smile made her eyes sparkle.  "My girlfriend would love you."

Her voice was clear of subterfuge and I found myself smiling back. "Next week?  I'm sure our parents already exchanged our contact information."  And faking a relationship would save me getting blindsided at every event.

"Call me."  She finger-waved and then headed for a crowd of friends who proceeded to glance my way, slipping a few quickly smothered cackles.  I nodded before heading off to work the crowd.

Despite my parents' efforts, the night was going better than expected.

Hi!  I'm so happy right now.  I'm getting to do interviews with all three of you lovely ladies at Ink Monster on three series I am just in love with so sort of fangirl heaven!  Okay let's get started!

Why did you become a writer/author?
Because Jurassic Park isn’t real yet.  I’m switching to a brontosaurus wrangler as soon as that’s a legit career option.  Also because I answer question like that and there’s no other job I can do without getting fired.

How do you come up with the names for your characters?
I get a lot from my travels.  Thane (one of the minor characters) was an elevator inspector in Chiang Mai, Thailand.  Although oddly enough, I didn’t name Quanta.  She came pre-named when I signed onto the series with Aileen and Christina.  I changed literally everything else about her (at least three times but the name stuck!

What books are you currently reading?
I just finished Throne of Glass by S. J. Maas and started The Mark of Noba by G.L. Thomas.  I’ve been in a YA mood lately.

Haven’t we all!  With two POV's, Quanta and Altair, what were your favorite parts of writing each?
It’s nice to have two very different voices.  Quanta’s fun to find verbs for (and she and I share a serious sweet tooth) and then I like switching from her quirky tone to Altair’s tighter, almost more academic style.

Quanta sees many different possibilities for the future that change by the choice?  How does she cope with this and not go crazy?  Can she be surprised?
The future is always changing, so she’s never really certain what people will do until right before they do it.  It gets hard for her to figure things out when there are a lot of possibilities, and it makes her a little disconnected from reality at times.  She can definitely be surprised, though!  Especially when something big’s on the way that’s going to change her path…Wonder what that could be?! ;)

Altair seems to have it all, on the path for everything her was designed for in their world but he became a Shadow Raven fighting against the system he would excel in.  What makes Altair different from the rest of the Seligo?
He had a bad experience that seriously changed his way of thinking (you’ll see…!).  He also got tired of watching the Seligo treat his sister like a loser because she didn’t get a Helix.  You don’t mess with Cassiopeia Orpheus if you want to stay on Altair’s good side!

If you could have immortality, would you take it?  I admit I might like the idea, that way I might have a real chance at finishing my TBR ;)
Sure!  And for the same reason.  I’m going to need a lot of years to write all the books I have planned.

I know there is a lot of team work at Ink Monster, but The Shadow Ravens seems like a real group project with Aileen Erin writing the first book featuring Cipher, you working on Quanta, and rumor has it Christina Bauer working on the third book and character.  How is it working on the project?  Are there any difficulties not being the only voice?
We really have to cooperate.  It’s all a bit of an experiment and we keep changing the plan and learning what works and doesn’t in a collaborative world like this.  Right now, we’re planning two more Quanta books (a full trilogy of Quanta!) and then the baton will pass back to either Cipher or Christina’s character.  Luckily we’ve all been writing together for a few years, so we know what everyone needs to be effective.  It’s definitely not for every writer, but we’re all still speaking to each other, so we much be doing okay with it J

Now for a little fun.  Book boyfriends.  We all love them.  Who is your book boyfriend?
My first book boyfriend ever was Numair Salmalín from Tamora Pierce’s Immortals series and I still have a soft spot for him.  The scene where he and Daine finally kiss still gives me butterflies!  Wizards are really underrated as book boyfriends.

Do you have any new projects coming up?
Quanta:  Reset will come out next October, or possibly sooner depending on scheduling and how much people are clamoring for more Shadow Ravens J We’re also planning for more to write an Alpha Girl spin-off one of these days.  Aileen’s been letting me slowly take over one of the characters…Can you guess which one??

I’m hopping on Meredith!  How can your readers get in touch?
I’m on all the social medias.  Instagram and Twitter are my favorites, but I love a good e-mail, too!

Okay so you may have noticed how excited I've been for this book for a multitude of reasons if you've been following my blog long.  I was beyond excited to receive and ARC for review, already had it pre-ordered but getting it early just means I can enjoy it that much sooner.  And enjoy it I did.

Rating: 5 Cupcakes

Quanta is the second book in The Shadow Ravens series, this book is written by Lola Dodge.  Now you can read it alone, the story holds it's own but it will have some spoilers of things mentioned that happened in book one, Cipher.  So be warned there.  That's it.  Same world but this time we follow the path of another red, Quanta.  She is a captive.  She has a very rare and unique red power, the power to see into the past and different possible futures.  It's dual prospective, so we also see things from Altair, a Shadow Raven himself but one that is on the fast track to becoming Seligo, the immortal elite, born to be perfect but a prisoner in his own life as well.  When they meet it hits the fan and things start moving.

There isn't a dull moment in this book.  I couldn’t put it down.  I got so mad when people interrupted me from reading, having to remind myself I was at work so I couldn’t ignore them or yell at them, but still.  It was amazing.  I loved Quanta from the first moment.  What she is living with, a test subject trying to use her gift to protect those she can while also trying to protect herself from losing what little control she has of her life.  She is a lab rat and never seeing a positive future for yourself only ones with less pain would drive anyone insane.  And Altair, he is somewhat of a know it all, but one you like.  He kind of reminded me of Sherlock and House in a way, knowing everyone is out for something and noticing things others wouldn’t catch to use to his advantage.  He is also completely focused on is work.  He doesn't like the way things are and only plays along to keep up appearances for a bigger purpose.  Constantly being watched and told how to behave to advance while others plan out your life, he has only slightly more control over his life than Quanta.

These two meeting was priceless.  Her visions of him, of them, would distract the most strong willed person.  Quanta has some hilarious lines that made me snort while reading.  Priceless.  I was stuck between understanding her reasons and wanting to strangle her when she made some decisions, as is par for most books.  Images of them happy and in love kissing and snuggling, hopeful followed up by images of pain and loss and death are hard to sort.  The happiness is so easy to want given her life but when the happiness seems tainted with blood, pain, and heartache is it worth it?  Altair knows they are bound and he has to free her, not just because he feels it is right but somehow they have found a way to use her skills to hurt the shadow ravens.  Neither of them will stand for that.

This book has a great story and characters you want to know every single thing about but it's also full of action.  You have corporate espionage type thing going on, all 007 like working for shadow ravens and gun fights, chases, and more.  There was always something happening be it action or with the characters that you wanted to keep going.  Also it's hard to have covert conversations when your every move is monitored.  I highly recommend this book!  If that wasn't clear enough already.  Quanta is out on the 13th so pick up your own copy and give it a go.  Share any thoughts and questions down below in the comments as usual!
