Deadly Sweet (The Spellwork Syndicate #1)

Hello happy readers!  I hope you all are feeling better than me, my sinuses have been making breathing a difficult thing the last few days and I am starting to think I should buy stock in tissues from how many I've gone through.  That said the positive side is I've been getting some reading done so that is always a plus.  Before I dive into that reminder that I have a giveaway going for a SIGNED Copy of Warcross (Warcross #1) by Marie Lu open until 2/2 here.  That said I am excited to review today's title as it was one I was anticipating given the author and the subject matter.  Deadly Sweet (The Spellwork Syndicate #1) by Lola Dodge which I received a copy from NetGalley for an honest review.

Rating:  5 Cherry Pies

Deadly Sweet is about baking, witches, and everything in between.  Anise loves to bake and using her magic in it but being a witch is a bit hard outside of certain areas where you have to hide what you are.  So when Anise ends up with a chance to study under a long-lost relative who owns the only magic bakery in the US, she is more than excited for the chance.  Upon arriving for her dream apprenticeship she learns that it won't be as simple as she thought.  She has lots to learn from pastry school and oh yeah the last apprentice went missing under mysterious circumstances and there may or may not be a reason for her to have a full time security detail. But for a dream job what's a little danger?

This book appealed to me on so many levels.  First witches and intrigue are always fun but when you add in baking….magical baking.  I'm all for it.  I love to bake and as I read I may or may not have wrote down some new treats I want to try in the near future.  Also the kitchens described may or may not have stirred up a lot of kitchen envy as well.  There is a clear love for baking in the writing which comes through vividly and made me connect to Anise.  She wants this with all that she is and is willing to go through hell to make it happen.

My own creation!
Aside from making me hungry and itch to bake (and seriously step up  my decorating game) I enjoyed the way magic was woven in.  There are different types and levels to work with.  I loved how the little things could impact the overall product.  There are still many questions to uncover in this world for sure but it is so full and vibrant.  I love the contrast from growing up moving around to keep their secret and the open town that everyone human and witch are out and about normal as breathing.  I loved seeing Anise adjust from one norm to another and what being open meant for her not only as a witch but as a teenager.  To be yourself and be able to make friends, honest friends, was amazing.  A little assassination attempt here or there is hardly worth giving that up.

The characters really lit up the page.  I could see Wynn scowling even before I read it after a few encounters.  He is very…mysterious.  There is a lot more I want to know about Wynn and what drives him; more about Shields in general as the series continues but still as little as he said I totally feel I know him.  Same could be said for her new friends and the other ladies of the Syndicate.  It is a small town vibe to it and I enjoyed the way Anise was both welcomed in and accepted while on the same side thinking they know you based on the family name.  I found that very true of a small town.

Overall this is a great start to a new series and I will be adding it to my auto-buy list for sure because I need to know what happens next.  So much has happened in one book but there are so many characters and stories to explore yet.  Power to be learned and many many more goodies to be baked!  I highly recommend this book…and maybe something for the sweet tooth this will activate!

                Until next time…

Cherished (Beholder #3)

Hello happy readers!  So today I'm pleased to be reviewing a new Ink Monster release, the latest in the Beholder series by Christina Bauer, Cherished (Beholder #3).  I have reviewed the previous books Cursed and Concealed and of course have loved them so I was eagerly looking forward to this one.  I always look forward to new books by the author.  Cherished is out Tuesday May 30th so make sure to check out your copy!  I received an early ARC from NetGalley and the publishers for an honest review.  Spoilers for the first two books, duh.

Rating: 5 Loaded Totem Rings

When we left off in Concealed I was a bit heartbroken.  I didn't see how it was possible that Rowan had betrayed Elea like that.  That he could be so sweet and amazing to her but really be engaged to her friend Amelia.  Our Elea already has trust issues given what her former best friend, Tristan did to her.  Still they defeated the Tsar and the Vicomte and she is back home on her farm where she wanted to be.  Running Braddock Farm is supposed to be her life but after the past few years it's a bit less than she's used to, even with her flirty friend Philippe there to keep her company.  So when someone comes calling trying to kill her it gives her a bit of the excitement she has grown used to.  Shujaa is a Changed One who has hybrid magic and promises he will ruin her and kill Rowan.  While seeing him is the last thing she wants to do, if hybrid magic is involved she knows he is her best chance of defeating this new evil.  That's all, not that she still has feelings for him or anything.

I admit when the last one ended, while I loved the book and series I was a bit heartbroken and didn't understand how Rowan could have done what he did.  I had no idea how things could be fixed, how he would be able to redeem himself in my eyes after that.  I was well and truly worried I wouldn’t be able to enjoy Rowan again.  I clearly didn't have enough faith in the author because the way this story plays out I totally love Rowan still.  So yes Elea and Rowan, I still ship them and love them so hard.  Elea is still strong as ever and no matter how much her training tells her to not show emotions or be ruled by hear heart she isn't very good at that.  I love that she is one to think with her head but she also lets her emotions show unlike a good little Necromancer.  She has an entire army she brought back from the dead that want to follow her and she wants nothing to do with that.  She isn't power hungry like so many other leaders she just wants to find her own slice of happiness.  While Rowan is the leader of his people who are fickle to say the least and still even when they doubt him and cheer for another to rule he is strong and continues to fight for his people.

The chemistry is there from the start.  Even before they see one another again you can feel it in the air and while you hate that he is engaged to Amelia I kept hoping he was right and there was an explanation that would make it better.  I just love the magic these two create and not just the hybrid magic.  One thing I love about them together is that they are equals, they may want to protect one another but they are equals.  I really enjoy a romance that has each on equal footing and where the man accepts his partner is kick butt and doesn't need to sit the fighting out.

We also get to see more into Caster life.  Some of the traditions and prophecies they live by.  It becomes clear that some things have different meanings and rules.  We also get to meet more of the Casters including Rowans brothers and even his mother.  Some we clearly like more than others.  For instance I just adore little Jicho.  Zoriah not so much.  Anywho this is all because of Viktor, yes even banishing him for a second time hasn't stopped his destruction as he left behind totems to continue his work.  This man is seriously one bad dude.

There is plenty of character moments for sure as Elea fights to figure out what life she really wants but this is a battle story and there is lots of action and fighting happening.  These characters we love so much never get a break because they are always needed to face some big bad.  I love this story so much and while there is still so much that has me concerned from the ending I can't wait to see what happens.  I also have a few questions left unanswered.  So I'm ready for book four, Crowned

                Until next time…

Quanta Rewind (The Shadow Ravens #4)

Hey happy readers!  So I have been having a bit of formatting issues with Blogger this week but I'm hoping I've resolved it all because OMG the stress it caused.  Anywho today the important thing I want to discuss is the latest installment in the Shadow Raven series, Quanta Rewind (The Shadow Ravens #4) by Lola Dodge that came out this Tuesday.    I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review and I have since received my pre-ordered copy as well!

Rating:  5 Stars

We left off with our rebels having to disband camp and separate putting a damper on their goals to fight Doctor Nagi and the whole Helix system.  They are back on defensive as more Reds end up dead or go missing.  Cipher, Devan, and Quanta are making the most of their hiding out trying to train to use their abilities as a team.  It's not easy.  Even with her ability to see into the future or rewind time things are as dangerous as ever.  Even working as a team with all the power between them Seligo have established power and masses on their side.  The must work to save their friends and put an end to Doctor Nagi once and for all or never find a moment of peace.

You probably know if you've read my other reviews for this series I adore these couples and I ship them hard.  Quanta and Tair are adorable and I love seeing Cipher and Knight through the eyes of my other favorites because I get a win / win in seeing them both!   Quanta continues to astound me with her strength.  If you think about her powers she seems all powerful but this series does a great job of showing not just the benefits but well thought out flaws/troubles with the power.  More importantly is shows her mental strength to be able to push past all the negative images she sees and look for the good.  Tair is more physically powerful but he's also all about using his brain to solve problems and is one of the things that connects them.  In the last book we lost the mental connection between the two, so no more internal conversations which just like for the characters it took a moment to adjust too.  I found myself thinking just tell him/her in your mind…and then Quanta/Tair would think how she missed being able to do just that.  I was there with them.

They were kind of made for one another sure but their connection has always felt so well thought out and natural.  Plus even if it hasn't been that long they have probably rewound time enough to give them several months of extra time together just saying.  They get one another and I love when characters have that.  The ability to look at the other and know something is off or know what they are thinking and lets be honest in a story when you are constantly in a fight for your life that's a huge quality.  But more so than just my couples, and I even feel like we might have the beginning of another couple in the future happening, just an inkling I had while reading, we have the team.  All of these different personalities working together and trying to adapt to one another.  Two guys are all about their ladies and then you have Dex who's just there to say the most colorful things.

There is lots of action happening as well I mean they are fighting a war.  I really enjoy how the story is written in the way of the rewinds.  We don't see every aspect the same with a slight variation it's more we see some trips and others we just hear about which helps keep the pacing up but also really focuses more on Quanta and Tair and their reactions to the rewind.  They have to readjust plans based on what happened (aka what went wrong) but that usually comes with the pain of the rewind and seeing someone (if not all) you care for die.  Emotionally draining.  Even though you know the ability to rewind is there every time something happened to one of my crew I got super nervous because who knows what could happen.

In Quanta Rewind we also dive a bit more into the world as a whole.  We've been inside the Citadel, the Voids, and with the Ravens.  We see there is more to the world.  I'm excited to see what the next book will focus on as there are so many items that could take the lead and make an interesting story.  I highly recommend this series as always they are super fast and fly right by in one sitting!

Shattered Pack (Alpha Girl #6)

Hello happy readers!  So this post is a day late but I was out of town yesterday and it wouldn't let me post via phone so….an extra post today.  Yesterday was the release for Shattered Pack (Alpha  Girl #6) by Aileen Erin and as you may know I LOVE this series!  Seriously I read each book in one sitting and then as soon as it's over wish I had more.  This was no exception.  I have previously reviewed the other titles: Becoming Alpha, Avoiding Alpha, AlphaDivided, Bruja, and Alpha Unleashed.  There are spoilers for the previous books, duh.

Rating:  5 Stars

In Shattered Pack we follow Meredith this time around instead of Tessa.  I loved Meredith from the first book on and when she found her mate Donovan, Alpha of the Celtic Pack….I was so in love with him.  So a book with them at the center was totally something I needed.  So when we let off our gang had faced down Luciana and her hoard of demons and come out on top but they also exposed themselves to the public.  This makes things a bit uneasy as the world comes to terms with it and the different communities are rattled with the exposure.  Donovan is stretched thin between his job as an Alpha and as one of the Seven already but add in this mess and it's hit a breaking point.  His pack isn't in the best shape but when he gets the call that his second has been murdered they head for Ireland.  Not an ideal time given the tensions but even with some exes and not so friendly welcome Meredith is there for her mate never one to let a few angry wolves stop her.

Again I love that we get a book focused on Meredith and Donovan.  I loved them in the previous books, I mean I imagine him with the accent and….well yeah.  But Meredith is such an amazing character.  She is so strong and sweet.  She loves her friends fiercely and believes friendship outranks everything else.  I love that about her.  Donovan is so powerful but he doesn't flaunt it and is really just a softie.  They really balance one another out.

We get to see more about the world at first, how the normal world is dealing with the whole news of supernatural.  Things have been flipped and the school they call home isn't safe so we go home with Meredith.  Getting to meet her family and know the pack she has been a part of outside of her satellite pack was great.  Her family is serious business.  It makes sense why Meredith is the way that she is, strong, fierce, and loving.  Then we shift to Donovan's pack and it is a completely different story.  They have been largely without an Alpha for so long as he had been stretched thin with his work for the Seven and things have fallen into disrepair.  To see the contrasts was great.  I also loved how Meredith went in knowing it would be dangerous but also knowing this was an important part of the man she loves so she wants to make it work and improve things.

There was lots of everything we love in these stories from romance (Can I say enough how cute Meredith and Donovan are together) to pack politics, mystery, suspense and tons of action.  There is so much happening you can't put the book down for a second.  From getting to know some new players to seeing our old favorites it flew by and as always I need more.  I can't wait for book seven in the series and I'd be happy to follow any of our couples around but I can't wait to see what happens with the Celtic Pack.

                Until next time…

Quanta Reset (The Shadow Ravens #3)

I am glad to be back!  And today I am super excited to have another Ink Monster review for the newest installment in the Shadow Ravens series, book three, Quanta Reset.  You can check out my reviews of the previous two books Cipher and Quanta and get caught up because we pick up right where we left off and let me just start off with saying WOW!

Rating:  5 Shadow Ravens

When we left off Quanta and Tair had managed to unlock her new power and escape from Dr. Nagi and rejoin the Shadow Ravens and Lady Eva and while things were better than being prisoners they were far from happy go lucky.  Quanta was struggling being around so many people and focusing with the constant assault of time ghosts, the pasts and possible futures and let's not forget they are in a war and in hiding.  We pick up quickly after that.

Quanta is struggling at the compound.  Her only bright spot is Tair and their decision to look at their genetic pairing as a positive rather than a negative.  They continue to test the limits of her abilities while Tair works on a way to help her with the constant pain being around people causes.  Things are never that easy as they try to flush out a traitor in their mists and track down Dr. Nagi and his continued experiments to duplicate her power could end everything.

Quanta Reset is one big action filled adventure that takes you on a whole roller coaster of emotions.  I was sucked in from the start wanting so badly to see Quanta and Tair to have a little bit of downtime, a much needed break to be them because they are so cute together!  That's not in the cards so they are thrown from one situation to another and things look bad for my pair.  Still even with everything going on at the compound there were bits of calm, or as calm as one can be in this world, that really grounded and reestablished all the reasons I do love them.  The pairing we learned about at the end of Quanta could be the blame for the protective instinct but it's clear seeing them together and how they know one another so easily it's real.  His desire to put her above all else, she is his priority and while he wants to protect her he doesn't try to suffocate her but give her space and let her make her own choices.

Things continue to get crazy and really start to mess with your emotions if you're as invested in the characters as I am.  I mean Quanta has this amazing ability but the pain it causes her almost debilitating her in everyday life is insane but still she wants to push to help.  There was a point, I don't want to ruin it by explaining but you'll know when you get to it, where I was thinking "Oh no NOT good" and that continued to grow and keep me on the edge of my seat until the last page and then some.  I couldn't put it down.  That is one of my favorite aspects of these books, they are so quick and full of things happening you fly through them easily but they take you on a full journey each and every time.

One other things I enjoyed about this one was we also got to see more about Cipher and Knight from book one.  They are on the compound so seeing them interact as one was really cute.  Our two couples both men worried about their hard headed and determined Red.  Seeing them side by side….yum!  We also get introduced to a new Red with an interesting power whom I hope to see again.

Well that's all I can say.  I haven't disliked a book yet.  Another great thing is when you finish a book you know when the next one will be out.  In this case Quanta Rewind will be out on April 25th 2017!  They even have a hand pre-order link which is great because I know I can't wait!  Quanta Reset is out today and if it's not clear I HIGHLY recommend this series to everyone!

                Until next time…

~Waiting on Wednesday~ Shattered Pack (Alpha Girl #6)

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.  Basically books that are not yet out that we are dying to get our hands on.  This week’s pick is:

Shattered Pack (Alpha Girl #6) by Aileen Erin
Out:  11/29

From Goodreads:
Meredith Molloney never thought she'd find a mate, let alone someone like Donovan Murry—one of the most powerful Alphas alive.  Now that she's no longer cursed and the evil Luciana Alvarez has been taken care of, she thinks life will finally settle down.  Boy, has she never been so wrong.

In the middle of the night, Donovan gets a call telling him that his pack has gone to pieces.  The news that his second in command has been found brutally murdered has Donovan packing his bacgs for Ireland, but the last thing Meredith wants to do is leave Texas.  She's heard about how the Celtic Pack are with outsiders.  And Donovan has more than a few exes in the pack that will be less than friendly.

Meredith's never let a few angry wolves stop her, and she's not about to start now.  She's faced down much worse the past few months.  But when she gets there, she finds that it's not just a few exes who stand in the way between her and her Full Moon Ceremony with Donovan.

Meredith is thrust in to a deadly game of pack politics, one the few have happily joined in on.  When the dust settles, she knows she'll either have everything that she wants or lose it all.

Why I’m Waiting:
Okay so first YAY another Alpha Girl book!  If you don't know by now I LOVE this series.  I am also thrilled to have another Meredith and Donovan book because yeah they are awesome.  I'm on the edge of my seat with both anticipation and worry because it sounds like trouble for my ship!  Plus....IRELAND!!!!!

What are you waiting on?  Tell me below what you think of this title and leave a link to your WoW as well so I can check it out!

Cursed (Beholder #1)

Hello happy readers!  So today I have exciting news a new book for Christina Bauer starting a new series put out by InkMonster.  I’m so excited to share the news with you on this one as you may know with how much I mention it, I LOVE her other books in the Angelbound series.  That being said the new book is called Cursed and is book one in the new Beholder series that deals in magic.  I received an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley and Ink Monster.

Rating: 5 Stars

There hasn’t been a book by Ink Monster that I haven’t completely loved and Cursed is no exception.  We follow Elea, a girl with necromancer magic, who doesn’t see the need to use it for much but helping in chores around the farm.  No formal training or anything.  Then one day her best friend returns to town with the news that the new Tsar has placed a curse and she will burn and burn as a ghost tortured for all eternity in five years to the day.  Elea knows the chances of her changing the curse are slim but she is determined.  Embracing her powers she goes to be trained, made into a Grand Mistress able to kill the Tsar and void his curse.  Five years of training and planning and then everything goes wonky when she runs into a handsome mage in Caster magic, Rowan.  He has new information that makes her rethink her entire strategy and consider a partnership with this man who brings her a lot of confusing feelings.

Our MC Elea is a bit older, 18 when the curse is placed and then 5 years of training, so this story does contain a bit of adult material in way or violence and some language.  Nothing extreme just a friendly notice that the characters are a bit older.  Elea is a strong character who has had to fight for everything she holds dear and then when she is cursed she continues to fight, determined to fight the odds against her.  She is fiery and I liked her instantly.  She has magic but she isn’t controlled by it or reliant on it, just using it to help her with her normal life chores still doing work herself.  Sometimes we find people with magic become lazy, let’s be honest I would, but not Elea.  As she is trained they are taught to not show emotion, complete control of your emotions is a key to controlling the magic, but she’s a bit quick tempered and more in the speak/act then think part of the population; so 90% of us.  Then she is pushed back out into a world in which she has to interact with vast amounts of people that is so different from her life thus far it’s a challenge.  Rowan, our handsome Caster is guarded sure when he needs to be but he is also open and warm in ways that Elea isn’t used to.  Their dynamic is rather fun.  His type of magic is both similar and different and seeing them together was interesting for sure.  Plus, he’s a sexy and powerful mage who wants to help so even someone trying to keep emotions cut off is going to notice.
There is a lot going on from planning and improvising to accomplish their goal.  Nothing is ever as easy as it seems.  There is always bumps along the way.  I really enjoyed getting to know some of the secondary characters as well like Nan, Ada, Sophie, Laurel, Orion, Jakob, even Marlene and Viktor were very interesting.  Plus we learn about the different types of magic and what they mean to Changed ones, cloisters, familiars and more.  Bauer was able to create a unique little world that was easy enough to pick up and understand and want to know more about.  There is action and suspense moving things along with just a touch of romance sprinkled in as we uncover the mysteries that are laid out before us.

I highly recommend this book for anyone enjoying a bit of magical adventure.  I mean there are some brutal moments that hit you square in the feels but that makes it better.  You connect with them and fall easily into the story.  I flew through it and am already look forward to the sequel and seeing if some of my pending theories are true.  Cursed is out now and I hope you will check it out because I need to discuss in spoiler-y detail with someone ASAP!  Only half kidding ;) Tell me your thoughts and feels in the comments below.

                 Until next time…

~Waiting on Wednesday~ Cursed (Beholder #1)

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.  Basically books that are not yet out that we are dying to get our hands on.  This week’s pick is:

Cursed (Beholder #1) by Christina Bauer
Out: 3/29

From Goodreads:
Most days, Elea couldn’t care less about having Necromancer magick.  Who needs to conjure skeletons and spirits when you’re a farm girl?  Elea only uses her powers to speed up chores and scare off suitors.

Everything changes when the evil Necromancer Tsar curses Elea.  Now, Elea has five years left before she burns as a ghost, tortured for all eternity.  They say there’s nothing she can do, but Elea disagrees.  She decides to embrace her Necromancer powers, train as a magickal assassin, and kill the Tsar…All before his curse kills her.  Impossible as it may sound, Elea thinks she has it in the bag, but then everything goes horribly wrong.

That’s when a handsome mage named Rowan steps up to help.  Elea wants an ally, but she doesn’t need all the mixed-up feelings that come along with Rowan’s crooked smile.

An assassination mission is no time to fall in love, but Elea’s heart may have other ideas…

Why I’m Waiting:
Okay this is an Ink Monster book and we all know how I LOVE their other books!  I have read all of them so far and been blown away by them so I’m all for this new series!  So aside from my automatic need for this book, the plot sounds super interesting.  Cursed to have five years before you turn into a ghost and are tortured for all of eternity!  Necromancy, which I’m developing a bit of a fascination with in books as I’ve stumbled into it more and more and I’m liking it.  Oh and magickal assassinations and ill-timed romance.  Yep I need this in my life ASAP!

What are you waiting on?  Tell me below what you think of this title and leave a link to your WoW as well so I can check it out!

Quanta Reset Cover Reveal!

Hello everyone!  Okay so normally I'd have a Top Ten Tuesday post for you but this week I've totally come up blank on anything good for my answers putting way too much thought behind it so since I didn't have anything and I did have a cover reveal and new release information to share I wanted to do that instead!  That said there is some awesome news for today.  We have the new cover for Quanta Reset, the third book in the Shadow Ravens series by Ink Monster which you probably know I LOVE!  I can't wait to get my hands on this book!  Now let's see the cover and find out more of what's in store for Quanta, Altair, and the Shadow Ravens.

Quanta Reset
Lola Dodge
(The Shadow Ravens #3)
Published by: Ink Monster LLC
Publication date: October 4th 2016
Genres: Science Fiction, Young Adult

Quanta has escaped her laboratory prison, but that’s where the good news ends.
Life at the Shadow Ravens’ compound is a disaster. She’s drowning in visions of the dark pasts and darker futures of her fellow Ravens and is plagued by her own panic- inducing memories, but Lady Eva still expects her to “train” and “participate in missions.” Plus, the food tastes like burnt plastic.
The only bright spot is her genetic pairing to the brilliant Altair Orpheus. As their relationship grows, she’s positive that chemicals aren’t the only things drawing them together—although chemistry is definitely involved.
While they test the limits of her game-changing new ability to reset time, word arrives from Eva’s agents: Doctor Nagi is still experimenting with her DNA. If he succeeds in duplicating her power…
Forget the Shadow Ravens. The whole world is toast.

Tessa McCaid has had it up to here with supernaturals.  Luciana may have failed to steal Tessa’s magic but she’s just getting started on her crusade for magical domination.  If her demonic summoning isn’t stopped, it could mean the end of everything.

Tessa’s allies, including her mate Dastien, are ready to fight, but they’re no match for Luciana’s power.  A little help (and ancient Inca mojo) from Tessa’s cousin, Claudia, may give the side of good a chance if she can make it home in time, but stopping the war is no longer an option.

When witches and wolves fight, no one wins.  Only time will tell who will still be standing after the last spell is cast.

Author Photo - Aileen Erin                Thank you for taking the time to do an interview.  I am beyond excited to find out more about our gang.  I'm also excited to see how Claudia and Lucas continue to interact given how new they are to this.  I'm holding out hope that she will eventually at some point change her mind and make the change so she can live a much longer life with Lucas.  I can't wait to see your answers.

First I have to say that I am a HUGE fan and just adore this series so much.  I fly through each book and then thankfully don't have to wait too long for another one.  How did you decide on your brand of wolves?

AE:  Yay!  I'm so glad that you like the series!  I love writing them, so it always makes me happy to know that someone is enjoying them.  J

Regarding deciding on my brand of wolves, I'd read a lot of urban fantasy, and learned a lot of what I liked and didn't there.  That's where I started to get the idea of putting my own stamp on the werewolf genre.  Then, I did a ton of research on the origins of the werewolf and what various cultures say about it, and then watched some wolf documentaries and read a few books about wolf packs.  I took bits of what I liked from each, and since I get to make it up—ignored the bits that I didn't like so much.
Eve: I could google images of these beautiful creatures all day!

Did you do a lot of research before/as you write the series?  Covens and wolf packs and the like?

AE: Yes!  I've been interested in the paranormal—magic, witches, werewolves—for a very long time.  I have a whole bookcase dedicated to my research books that I've collected over the years.  And once I decided to write the Alpha Girls series, the collection started growing even more.  I have some fascinating books on witchcraft and covens—some of them a little terrifying—but like I did for the wolves, when it came down to writing about it, I just picked and chose which bits I liked the most and ignored the rest.

The bond between mates is very intense.  How did you decide on what would go into the bond?

AE:  I really liked the idea of having a balanced relationship.  I find a lot of romance—especially YA and NA romance—has a very skewed idea about what a healthy relationship should be like.  So the bond between mates started out from that.  Then, I liked that they'd get to share powers and enhance what each other already has, which is what a good relationship should be.  It should make you want to be the best you can be and help you grow in a healthy, positive way.  I put in the telepathy because of something a friend of mind once said to me and my husband.  We were at a dinner party and had a few shared looks, and started cracking up.  We didn't say a word, but we had a whole conversation just us.  I thought that would be nice to put in there—that the couples were so in sync that they could talk telepathically.  Also it made it easier when they shift into wolf-form, so they can still communicate.

On a similar note there is a disparity of males to females.  With that we see many males trying to win a select number of females, does this cause a problem with the wolves in general?  More instances like Dastien and Tessa maybe?  What happens to the ones who don't find them basically?

AE:  Yes.  This causes a lot of problems, and puts a lot of pressure on the girls,  It's a pretty good way to show some tension, and also leaves some room for me to focus on other couples and matches—like I did for Claudia and Lucas.

After Tessa and Dastien, there might be more instances where a Were takes matters into their own hands.  But a lot of the guys end up hoping to find their true mate.  Their match.  I talk a little about the Cazadores—as they're the ones who haven't found their match.  But hopefully, someone will come along for each of them, given enough time.  And the Weres definitely have a lot of time.  Think about Lucas.  He waiting a LONG time for Claudia. ;)

In Alpha Unleashed we are diving back into Tessa, but I hope Claudia and Lucas will still be present because I did just adore them in Bruja and I think Lucas will be a real asset to our St. Ailbe's wolves.  Will we have some cousin time between Tessa and Claudia?  I'm dying for them to talk and compare notes as it were.

AE:  I'm so glad you liked bruja so much.  It was always a risk to veer away from Tessa and Dastien, but I felt like Claudia deserved her story to be told.

Claudia and Lucas are most definitely in Alpha Unleashed.  The books overlap, so Alpha Unleashed starts the morning that Claudia leaves for Peru.  But Claudia and Lucas and the rest of the gang that end up in Costa Rica will be back in Texas before all the action gets going.

Luciana is practicing some seriously dark stuff, how can those following her not see that?  And stand behind it?

AE:  I get into this a bit in Alpha Unleashed, but I think it's hard when you're trusting your leader to guide you.  The evil stuff didn't happen over night.  I think if she'd started doing bad things right away, they would've stood up against her.  But it was on a slow boil, and she had her reasons.  Being the coven leader meant that she had visions, too.  Only they're not as clear or as strong as Tessa's.  But still, the coven trusted her to guide them.  They didn't realize that Luciana's visions were a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy, and that her fear of coming war with the wolves were leading them into darker and darker magic as time went on.

I'm ready for the epic battle, though I am worried about some of my favorites as I know no one is safe.  From the description of Alpha Unleashed it seems the battle will be fought on several fronts, including in the media, coming out of the shadows.  How do you think our current world would react if wolves, witches, vampires, and such came out as real?  How would you react?

AE:   hope that I'd be welcoming, although I'd definitely be super curious.  I'd have a million questions for them!  And I would really hope I didn’t piss them off if I got something wrong in my books. ;)

With so many amazing characters in this world who is your favorite to write scenes for?

AE:  I want to say Tessa, but I really like Meredith a lot.  I think she's fun and spunky.  We got a little hint of her backstory in Avoiding Alpha, but I'd love to get her and Donovan a book.

Bogdana with Bogdana The Booknerd wants to know what book are you currently reading?  What's your favorite genre to read?

AE:  I'm reading The Haunting by Joan Lowery Nixon right now.  I ate up her books when I was in seventh grade, but I'm writing a paranormal ghost books next and I wanted to re-read her stuff.  I'm trying to figure out how scary I want to make it.  I feel like if I just start writing, I'll make the book so scary that I won't be able to sleep at night—which won't work at all. (If you have some ghost story books to recommend, I'll take those!)  Before that, I read—or devoured—Sarah J Maas's Queen of Shadows.  Loved it!  I finished it and went right back to chapter one to re-read it.  And the book before that was Jennifer Estep's Cold Burn Magic.  OMG!  So good!  Thankfully the second book is coming out 10/25, or else I'd be DYING.

I read fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal, some sci-fi, anything YA, NA romance, contemporary romance, and paranormal romance.  All variations on a theme.  I like speculative fictions, but I like it with a healthy dose of romance. J

OMG I'm reading Queen of Shadows now and I know what you mean.  Bogdana also asked an intriguing question, if you could co-author a series with anyone who would it be?

AE:  It's so hard to write that idea of writing something with someone seems at times more difficult logistically yet so tempting!  My critique partner for the last 6 years—Lola Dodge—is someone who I've actually talked about writing a series together.  In fact, I wrote Cipher, and she's writing the next book in the series—Quanta (out 10/13), and my business partner—Christina Bauer—is writing another character in the series—Maker (which doesn't have a set release date yet).  So that might happen!

Alpha Unleashed comes out October 13th is there anything you can share or tease us with?  Aside from the excerpt below, that is.

AE:  Teasers are so hard without drifting into spoilerland.  I will say that defeating Luciana will NOT be easy, but by the time all is said and done, I think all the readers will be very happy.  Or I hope they will!  J

Are you working on any other projects? You mentioned a ghost story.

AE:  I'm taking a little break from Tessa and Dastien to write a new series—Invocation, the first book in the Holy Ghost High series.  I've been writing Tessa and Dastien for…six years.  Becoming Alpha was my thesis for my MFA, so it's time for me to take a little break just to make sure I keep the Alpha Girl series fresh and don't burn out.  But I'll be back to it.  I can't stay away from Tessa and her gang for long!

Finally, how can fans reach you? (Links attached below for easy access)

AE:  I'm on all kinds of social media.  I'm slowest on Goodreads but everywhere else, I check daily.  J

Teresa Elizabeth McCaid—aka Tessa—is a girl who has never quite fit in.  At least, she didn't until she was bitten by Dastien Laurent, her mate.  Now, she's part bruja part werewolf, part human, and totally cool with it.  When she's not taking down evil witches and vampires, she likes to spend her time with Dastien.  They love to go for runs and listen to EDM.

Dastien Laurent is originally from France, but when his parents were brutally murdered, he came to Texas to live with his godfather—Michael Dawson.  He's always struggled with his alpha-side, but never as much as when he met Tessa.  He didn't mean to bit her, but he wouldn't change it for the world.  Even when evil witches are beating down the door, he never regrets a second.  With her, he's finally able to see his future.
excerpt (2)
I trailed off when I noticed Meredith staring hard at something behind me. I quickly glanced over my shoulder. “What?”
“What’s Shannon doing with that group?” Her lips pressed into a tight, thin line. “And is that Imogene?” Meredith and I might be split on how we felt about Shannon, but we totally agreed on Imogene.
I turned back to my now-cold omelet and took a bite. “I know,” I said after a second. “Looks like they’re BFFs now.”
She scrunched up her nose as she thought. “Why is she with those guys? Shannon has nothing in common with them. She’s from the Irish pack. And Imogene? Really?” Meredith stared at them like she could glean answers off them. “Maybe if we all try reaching out to her, she’ll sit with us again.”
I’d explained what happened between Shannon and I while Meredith was sick, but she didn’t understand. For better or worse, they’d been friends since forever. Their parents were friends and they’d grown up taking vacations together. Meredith was loyal, almost to a fault, and that meant she refused to give up on Shannon. “We tried that, remember? It didn’t work.”
“I should go over. Try talking to her again.”
I nearly rolled my eyes. Meredith had tried talking to Shannon, and in her defense—Shannon was still nice to her, but it was a losing battle. Shannon would obviously rather be with her new friends than us.
Meredith started to stand up, but I grabbed her hand. “I wouldn’t—”
“I have to try.”
I let her go as I tried to think of a way to say what I needed to say without making it worse. “I don’t know. I still can’t feel anyone at that table through the pack bonds. Including Shannon.”
Meredith crossed her arms as she stared down at me. “Whatever happened between you and her, she wouldn’t do anything to harm the pack. Shannon’s not capable of that.”
I disagreed, but saying so would only hurt Meredith’s feelings. “What if she thought it would help the pack?” And what if they aren’t part of our pack anymore? I thought the words but didn’t say them aloud.
For a second, Meredith’s lower lip trembled, and I thought I’d gotten through to her, but then she shook her head. “No. I don’t believe that. Not at all.”
I kept my mouth firmly shut. If there was one person I didn’t want to piss off, it was Meredith. She’d been my friend—no questions asked—from the beginning. She’d helped me through when all I’d wanted to do was run away from St. Ailbe’s. And when I’d sucked at running and kept falling out of windows, she hadn’t made fun of me. Much. “I just don’t want you to get disappointed.”
“I—” Meredith stopped in the middle of what she was saying, and turned to the door.
It took me a second to figure out what was going on, but then Donovan came into the cafeteria, and started our way. Maybe he’d be able to reach Meredith, because I sure as hell wasn’t getting anywhere.
She laughed at something he must’ve said through their bond. “Donovan is going to keep you company while I talk to Shannon. I’ll be back in a sec.”
There wasn’t any point in trying to stop her.
Donovan took Meredith’s spot at the table. He wore sweat pants and a T-shirt and his black hair was still messy from his run. His clothes gave of the scents of cedar and grass and dirt, and it almost made me jealous.
Maybe a run would clear my mind. Help me figure out a way around these visions.
“She’s checking on Shannon, eh?” Donovan asked, bringing me back to myself.
“Yeah.” I’d already said my piece to his mate. I didn’t need to repeat myself.
He jerked his chin toward the table in question. “There’s still something off about them.”
My fork dropped to the plate with a clatter, and I glared into his glass-blue eyes. “Oh, come on. We’re not doing this.”
Donovan raised his eyebrows. “Not doing what?”
He had to be joking. “I just had this conversation with Meredith. I know how the whole mate thing works. There’s not a chance she didn’t tell you.”
He gave me a wicked grin, and I knew trouble was coming. “Aye. But what you don’t know is that I agree with you.”
“You do?” Mr. Dawson had been all—everything’s fine. Donovan hadn’t said a word. Why now?
“Yes. I do.”
“What do you know?” I leaned toward him, lowering my voice. Pesky Weres and their super-awesome hearing. “Why are their bonds missing? I thought they couldn’t leave the pack without putting in a formal bid to Mr. Dawson.”
“That’s true enough. I don’t know what’s going on, but I think you’re going to find out. If this absence of pack bond is spreading, then we need to find the cause. Just… Don’t say anything to Meredith until we’re positive. All right?”
Whoa. I didn’t keep much—if anything—from Dastien. “Do you think that’s wise?”
“Keeping my opinions from my mate?” One side of his mouth quirked up. “Not usually. But she made her side clear enough with you, and I’d rather not start an argument that won’t get us anywhere.”
Who knew? Even the great Donovan—one of the all-powerful Seven—was afraid of pissing off his mate. The idea was a little preposterous, but then again—I didn’t like upsetting Dastien either. I’d done it. But that didn’t mean I liked it. That left me with one last question. “Why can’t you keep an eye on them? You’re probably way better at this pack bonds stuff than I am.”
He raised an eyebrow. “In case you’ve forgotten, I’m not of this pack. I’m an alpha, and can use that to overpower and override the pack bonds if necessary, but this needs more finesse. An insider’s look.”
“But your mate’s in our pack.” When Dastien bit me, I’d become part of the St. Ailbe’s pack. I figured it would be the same for Donovan and Meredith and their mate bond, even if they hadn’t gone through with their bonding ceremony.
“Doesn’t work that way. I’m already the alpha of another pack.”
“So, what about Meredith? Is she still part of this pack?”
“Until she and Michael decide to let her move to mine. She’ll keep it for as long as she’s here, and I think that’s best.” He leaned forward. “I’ve heard through Michael and Meredith, but I want to know what it is you’re feelin’ from them. I’ve not experienced this before, and that’s sayin’ something to me.” His Irish accent thickened, and I finally knew that someone else was as worried about this as I was.
“I don’t know what to say except that I can’t feel them. It’s like they’re there, but they’re not.” I sighed. “It makes no sense. Which is why Mr. Dawson blew me off when I brought it up. Shouldn’t you be talking to him about this? He’s the alpha.”
“What makes you think I haven’t already?”
The tension on my shoulders relaxed. It seemed like a good sign that two alphas were really talking about the problem. “And?”
“Nothing. If they’ve withdrawn from the pack, he’s not feeling it.” He leaned in closer, speaking so quietly that even I could barely hear. “But last night, he gave that group of boys from the Canada pack a direct command and they disobeyed. I backed the command and forced their obedience, but I shouldn’t have had to. He’s their alpha. It may be that Rupert Hoel’s influence went deeper than those we’ve caught. There’s still a major player out there, and I’ve a fine idea who it might be.”
Holy shit. That was bad news. Only someone more alpha than Mr. Dawson could ignore his commands, and they weren’t more alpha. At all.
“Who?”
“I think you might know. It’s one who got away.”
It hit me then. They’d kicked one of the Seven out of the Council. The one who hated me. Ferdinand. “Do you really think it could be?”
“Aye.”
“But you didn’t say anything when I brought it up before.”
“It took me longer to feel what you were getting at. I like to suss things out before actin’. Get fully aware of the situation. If you feel anything else out of the ordinary, let me know. Just be aware that if that lot wants to leave, that’s fine by me. They’re welcome to go their own way, but they need to make formal bids to Michael and they’ll have to tie to the Seven until they find their new packs. It must be done properly, or they’ll be considered lone wolves. And if they align with Ferdinand… I’d like those youngsters to avoid that if possible.”
My stomach churned, and suddenly I didn’t feel much like finishing my omelet. If the pack was breaking up, then how were we ever going to defeat Luciana? We needed to be united if we wanted to stand the slightest chance of surviving.

I was so excited to get to ask some interesting questions of the author but not nearly as exciting to read this book so I was stoked when my I got my ARC a couple weeks ago, even though my pre-order downloaded yesterday.  Now I get to share my thoughts with you.  Now as she mentioned this is a wrap of to the current open story arc.  While the door isn’t shut on all the characters in the future this is a sort of end.  My previous reviews:  Becoming Alpha, Avoiding Alpha, AlphaDivided, and Bruja.

Rating: 5 Stars

This book was amazing!  I have loved this series since the first book and each book in the series as I got to know the characters a little more in each story just made me love them more.  There is so much happening and wrapping up.  We have the epic battle with Luciana and her demon mojo and everything happening with the wolves, witches, fae, and humans.  There are a lot of moving parts and constantly something happening.

As much as I loved Bruja and seeing from Claudia’s POV I am happy to be back with Tessa for this final battle as it started with her.  She is so over the whole fighting mess, she wants it over with and just to live her life with her true mate, Daestien.  They have faced obstacle after obstacle and are ready for some peace.  I just love how they interact and how they can help each other through their different internal struggles simply by being there for one another.  Tessa is doubting herself after losing her powers however temporarily and feeling she will make the wrong move and be the cause for people she cares for dying.  That’s a lot on anyone’s shoulders.  Plus being concerned about your pack turmoil, the witches, and the humans and you’re lucky to be functioning.

I was super stoked to see Claudia and Lucas interact with the gang.  I didn’t get my talk I was hoping for…yet but there was still some good stuff and seeing Lucas around the gang was awesome!  Choosing sides and getting your people as ready as possible for what’s coming is the name of the game.  I really liked adding in the human perspective as well, it was a long time coming in my opinion.  No way would it have been under wraps much longer and seeing out supernaturals deal with that was humorous at times.

Again without giving much away, I was worried for all my characters life and limb throughout most of the book because there is no shortage of death in a war this large.  Still as this arc came to an end I feel that the main points have been wrapped up nicely.  It was very satisfying ending even as my heart raced through it all.  I highly suggest marathoning all five of these amazing books, they are superfast reads that you want to read in one sitting.

Now there is only one thing left to do and that is to check out the giveaway below and enter it!  Also spread the love in the comments below.  Did she answer your most pressing questions?  Who is your favorite character in the Alpha Girls series thus far?  When she continues the world in the future is there anyone you’d like to see the story focus on?  Let me know below.

                Until next time…
