The Star-Touched Queen ~Giveaway~

Hello happy readers!  I was planning to post this review and giveaway Friday but I ended up staying with a friend and got in super late then slept like the dead.  That said I had a great time at the release/signing event for TheStar-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi at Little Shop of Stories in Decatur, GA.  I have some more events planned for this month and will be putting my thoughts together on them in detail later on at No BS Book Reviews but for now just know it was a fun time.  I had dinner with some great book friends before hand and even more friendly faces there.  The store really is full of wonderful staff who love their job and remember their customers!

Rating:  5 Stars

The Star-Touched Queen is a debut novel and a stand alone!  First, I have found stand-alone fantasies are a rare find so cheers there.  Second, look at the cover!  So pretty!  I was happy my pre-order arrived the day of release so I had the day to read it before I went to the event, I always try to read the books before hand just in case anyone says something spoiler-ish!  The book is pretty quick and I flew right through it in pretty much one sitting, well I had to move I started in the pedi-chair and continued when home.  It's a story unlike anything I had read before.  We follow Maya who is cursed.  Born with a horoscope that promises death and destruction she has been an outcast in her father's kingdom and harem.  Until one day her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding for political convenience.  Maya becomes queen of Akaran and wife of Amar, neither are things she ever thought to want or wish for given her horoscope.  The world is magical but full of secrets.  She is asked to trust but when you know nothing it's hard to put faith in anyone or anything.  Fate, fortune, power, passions, reincarnation, mythology and more it has it all.

Wow.  This book kind of blew my mind.  The whole world created was so beautiful and magical for me, different from anything else I had read that I was in love.  From jeweled fruit on trees you can eat to doors that will take you to any number of places including the stars.  Maya was wonderfully written and I loved her way of thinking.  She went back and forth in her thoughts and feels on things as new information came to her.  She wavered.  She fought with her head and her heart.  She had fears but she also had passion and a willingness to do anything for those she cared for.  She was pretty awesome.  Amar was pretty swoon worthy.  He was mysterious in ways both good and bad but he was already enduring with Maya.  He was vague in many ways but what he did say always rang with a truth.  He also had some sweet moments that just made my little heart feel all the feels!

I really can't say anything else about the story as a whole or it might ruin the discovery.  The story is told in two parts and you just have to read it to understand all the beauty inside.  That and the whole mythology and destiny/fate aspect with the horoscopes just keeps you guessing.  Oh and the idea of harems and arranged marriages in a shed a different light on things.  Everything is so wonderfully packaged in this one little book that while I want more I am completely happy.  I did however, find that there is a companion to the book that would follow Maya's sister's path which makes me happy.  She was such an interesting character and the connection between Maya and her only added to my love of both.  Something about family.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments below.  Now for the goodies.  While at the signing I had the sweet Roshani sign an extra copy of her beautiful book to giveaway to one of my readers to enjoy!  The giveaway will be open until midnight Thursday May 12th.  This giveaway is open to US only.  I'd love to hear your thoughts and feels on fate and horoscopes and more.

Cruel Beauty

Hello and happy Friday!  I'm working this weekend but still plan to have a great time and hopefully do some good reading!  I've been trying to do really good about keeping up with reviews in a relatively close time to reading books but as I was discussing fairytale retellings with someone the other day and one mentioned was Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge and I realized I read it last year and really enjoyed it but never wrote a review.  That needs to be fixed so here it is.

Rating: 4.5 Stars

Cruel Beauty is a loose Beauty & the Beast retelling that also deals in magic and mythology.  We follow Nyx who has been betrothed to an evil ruler of the kingdom since birth because of a deal her dad made.  Since she was old enough to understand she has been trained to kill her husband to be.  She is resentful that of the twins she was the chosen one and treated differently always for a choice made for her.  She has no choice and instead plans to seduce and destroy him and the curse put on her people for over 900 years.  But when Nyx meets Ignifex finally he is not what she expected.  He is charming, handsome, and seems giving and caring rather than the evil she knows him to be.  Even his magical castle captivates her.  Still she searches for a way to free her people by uncovering his secrets and trying to fight the attraction to him.  It is insane after all to fall for your sworn enemy.

So this was different that I expected.  Going in I knew mostly that it was a B&B retelling and as that is one of my all time favorite Disney movies that I watch at least once every couple of months while singing along to every word I had to read it.  Plus the cover was so beautiful!  I see the parallels to the classic but it isn't so strict that it's predictable.  Nyx was at times a bit rough around the edges and hard but she is a seventeen year old girl who was treated different than her twin her whole life and somehow picked to be married off to some dark lord by her father.  That is horrible parenting so yeah while her inner rants might seem a bit excessive at times I was okay with it knowing what she went through.  Plus come on who wouldn't be constantly thinking about the things that ended them in a certain position?

There is a common edge to Ignifex and Shadow.  They seem similar in some aspects, handsome and charming in some respects but like opposites in others at first.  You also have our dark lord Ignifex who was much the beast I loved from the movies.  Not the beastly appearance, he's described as very handsome, but in that he is different than expected, kind but can have a cruel side and he gives her freedom to explore but keeps secrets from her.  Though he never pushes himself upon her for company or anything else.  He is rather the gentlemen at times.  Shade seems perfectly charming and friendly, open and honest without a single bad thing going for him, even a captive much like Nyx, but like Ignifex there is always more to a person than first glance or reputation.

The story progresses in a way I enjoyed and Nyx is able to see more of him Ignifex and wavers back and forth on her duty.  He is the master of bargains and while some seem cruel she is able to understand some of his reasoning.  Everyone in her world knows he is the devil and he bargains always cost more than they are worth but yet they still come.  I love how her inner darkness, her hate and resentment end up making her a better match for him being able to understand things more easily.  Still while the heart might say one thing it is selfish to make a choice for only oneself when an entire kingdom is at stake.  But can you crush the one good thing you finally found to save those who never treated you nearly as well?  It's a touch call and being in her head while she rationed through it all was what made it for me.

Anywho that's really all there is to say without spoiling it.  I have not yet picked up the other books by Hodge yet though I do look forward to doing so.  I have a couple on my shelf or kindle ready to go.  I'd love to hear your thoughts below.  Also please share any other B&B retellings because I'm sure I've missed some.

                Until next time…

When Nicole Cassidy moves from sunny Georgia to gloomy New England, the last thing she expects is to learn that her homeroom is a cover for a secret coven of witches. Even more surprisingly … she’s apparently a witch herself. Despite doubts about her newfound abilities, Nicole is welcomed into this ancient circle of witches and is bedazzled by their powers—and, to her dismay, by Blake—the school’s notorious bad-boy.

Girls who get close to Blake wind up hurt. His girlfriend Danielle will do anything to keep them away, even if she must resort to using dark magic. But the chemistry between Blake and Nicole is undeniable, and despite wanting to protect Nicole from Danielle’s wrath, he finds it impossible to keep his distance.

When the Olympian Comet shoots through the sky for the first time in three thousand years, Nicole, Blake, Danielle, and two others in their homeroom are gifted with mysterious powers. But the comet has another effect—it opens the portal to the prison world that has contained the Titans for centuries. After an ancient monster escapes and attacks Nicole and Blake, it’s up to them and the others to follow the clues from a cryptic prophecy so that they can save their town … and possibly the world.

Review:
Rating: 4 Stars

I didn't know a whole lot about this story going in just the summary.  I have shamefully not yet read the Percy Jackson books, though I plan to correct that in 2016, I did read The Secret Circle (or at least the original three books) and enjoyed them.  Plus I did enjoy the Percy movies and love Greek mythology, probably the only part in history class I ever paid attention to.  So I was ready to dive in.  Our MC Nicole is moved from her home she knew and loved to a completely new place where she is alone.  That sucks and from the start you feel for her, I know as a Navy brat growing up and moving all the time it always sucked going someplace new and leaving all your friends and having to make new ones.  Day one new school going into class and something crazy happens, the teacher starts to do magic and tries to convince her she's a witch.  While she thinks everyone in the class has lost it there is nothing to do but sit through it.  Until she starts to feel the magic and starts to believe them.

Now the class is full of the usual suspects you find in every school and most welcome her into the coven, though Danielle is a bit hostile.  Though she doesn't like anyone whom looks at her man, Blake, and has been known to break the law using dark magic to mark her turf.  Still knowing this Blake and Nicole seem to pull together despite everything.  She is a bit cray, like mean girls on crack level crazy possessive.  While a large part of the story does seem to focus on the triangle there in our group we also have Chris and Kate whom I enjoyed.  Kate was more of the level by the book gal and Chris is fun and energetic and made me laugh several times.  I did find the insta-connection to be a bit on the nose but as this is a story with magic and prophecy you can get away with some things, magic is a crazy thing after all.  I did even enjoy that Nicole didn't want to get involved or even like him based on him having a girlfriend, not that she was scared but that she didn't want to be that girl that went after a taken guy.

The hormones were a bit amped up and I did feel maybe a bit too much Secret Circle vibe in some parts and it does have some clichés but overall I really enjoyed the story.  Everything is fast paced and constantly moving.  You fly right through from one thing to the next and while it was predictable it was still fun and that is what I wanted.  I did really enjoy the take on witches and how they have their powers.  I'm ready to continue on with the series and know more about where our group ends up and how things progress because the end got kind of dark with lots of things.  I have hopes that the sequel which already has a title, cover, and release date will improve on a good start.

Why I’m Waiting:
So I haven’t read the Percy Jackson books just yet but I’m excited to do so as I love me some Greek mythology.  I also really enjoyed the original Secret Circle books, haven’t continued with the recent additions thus far.  So combining the things sounds like it could be interesting.  I’m curious.  I was recently gifted an ARC of this title and plan to start it this weekend if all goes well so looks like I won’t have to wait long!

What are you waiting on?  Tell me below what you think of this title and leave a link to your WoW as well so I can check it out!
