Ready. Set. Write. Week 6

Welcome to Week 6 of Ready. Set. Write.  Simple is the name of the game.

How I did on last weeks goals:
  • Finish The Darkest Minds ASAP!- Nope!  Just  haven't even though I'm enjoying it which makes zero sense.
  • Read Storm and Siege and Never Fade with my friend for our read-along and at least 1 other book from my TBR list. I finished Storm and Siege with my read-along group.  I never finished Darkest Minds so didn't start Never Fade I did finish a review book from my TBR list, a short story, and a manga that arrived Friday.
  • Type 4 reviews and post 2. 3/4 Done!  I posted my reviews for These Broken Stars and Every Day.  I also have one other review ready to go.
  • Finish my short I started. Pretty much.  It needs some editing and just a few minutes ago I thought of a line I wanted to add to it but I'm excited.
  •  Swapping things up: 3k words in my WIP- L Nope.  I am ashamed to admit I didn't work on it at all.
  • I’m going to get in with everyone else here and add exercise in some format at least twice (it’s small but from nothing I need to start somewhere). Okay so I know the bar was low but nope.  I did walk Saturday and intended to walk Sunday and keep it up but it's just so HOT I don't have the energy to move.

 My goals for this week:
  • Exercise 3 times this week (upping it some)
  • Write 2,500 words in my WIP
  • Edit my short story
  • Finish The Darkest Minds, I mean seriously it will get finished!  Also finish the Grisha trilogy with the read-along group.  Also read two additional books, one of which being Paper Towns so I can have read it before the movie comes out.
  • Write 3 reviews, trying to stay ahead and keep a schedule

A favorite line from my story OR one word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised:  (short story)
Get in a truck with a total stranger?  In the middle of nowhere.  This was the start to most serial killer movies.  Her overactive imagination was getting the best of her, he was probably just a nice guy.  Screw it.  She didn't have anyone else she was willing to call.  If he was a serial killer then fine, it would just round out her night.

The biggest challenge I face this week:  Feeling motivated to do anything when it is frankly just so flipping HOT.  I have the AC cranked but after my last power bill *cough* I've determined I can't afford to keep it at 65 all day despite my desire to do so.  It isn't hot at 75 by any means but I just want to chill and veg out.

Something I love about my WIP: That even when I take time off from it and don't work on it, the story still calls to me and doesn't feel abandoned.

That’s it for this week.

  1. HA! Your excerpt made me laugh :) It is winter here so I am having the same power bill problem but for a different reason! I can't get my house warm enough! I will send you some cooling thoughts.

I think it's amazing that you write reviews like that and have time to do anything else. I write some for my day job but the take me FOREVER and I have such a hard time organizing my thoughts in a coherent way. I really enjoy yours :) Have a fabulous week!

    1. Haha I wish and living in the South it feels like winter never happens or it does for a few days then hot then cold for a couple days then hot again. It's so split up it never feels good enough. Plus I'd rather be cold, I have blankets and such to keep me warm there is nothing for the cool even if you're wearing next to nothing lol.

Thanks, glad it was funny. It sums up my characters mind at that point. Also I never said my thoughts in the reviews are always coherent lol. I try to make them make sense but I ramble about in them when I discuss it's just who I am.

  2. I like that excerpt a lot (and totally sympathise with your character!). I think you've already done really with with three reviews and finishing a story, so you shouldn't be ashamed of not working on your WIP. It's just biding its time waiting for you to return to it. :)

I know what you mean about the heat... It just saps plans and makes you lethargic instead, doesn't it? I hope it's cooler (and therefore cheaper!) for you this week... Good luck with your goals this week!

    1. Thanks! I do feel semi-accomplished. I also cooked 3 meals at the same time Saturday so I'd have left overs all week and not have to worry about cooking. Pot of chili, quesadilla casserole, and a roast.

It doesn't feel cooler! I avoid the outside as much as possible. Plus the hardest part is I need it cool to sleep (I have to sleep with something on me which means cool to off set that) and working nights now I'm sleeping during the hottest part of the day thus working my AC harder :( Day shift should lower my AC bills some since I'll be at work during the hottest part most the time using works AC

  3. Good lord, lady! 65?! Our electrical bill would be, like, a thousand dollars if we kept our thermostat that low. Best of luck acclimating to 75. That's where we keep ours and it's not so bad, so long as you're not doing anything terribly active. 😬 I'm rooting for you to meet your writing and exercise goals this week (you can totally do it!) and enjoy your current reads. Have a good one, Eve!

    1. Haha yeah well thankfully it's just an apartment and good neighbors on top and both sides help insulate. Thing is I bake a lot so my over is always running making it hot or my cat, all 13 pounds of her, wants to cuddle and she makes some body heat lol. But it's just an adjustment and instead of reaching to crank it down lower I'm trying to just take a minute and cool down under the ceiling fan. The heat also makes wanting to sweat on purpose harder but I'm aiming to do it.

  4. Cute excerpt, and so true on some days! Sounds like you got a ton done this week if even you didn't hit all goals, so I'd call it a winner week! Stay coolish!

  5. I'm totally LOL-ing at that Satan's a--hole graphic. No. Doubt. It was pretty hot here too, which does absolutely nothing good for my motivation. I'm guessing it was a struggle for you as well? Good job finishing up your short! Have a great week, Eve!

    1. Thanks and happy I could spread the laughs because yes the heat is a struggle. Any movement feels hard when you get hot.

  6. My AC is cranked to 74. Cranked might be the wrong word, cuz that's warm. We finally got hot weather in our neck of the woods -- I'm not willing to let it go.

Make a pitcher of sangria and write. Ooh, that sounds good, I think I'll do it.

Congrats on your short story. Shorts are the bomb. And not easy to do.

    1. Thanks! You know that is an idea I might have to try my next week (this is my long work week only off Wed & Thur). I'm excited to finish editing my short.

  7. Even if you didn't get to some of your other goals, it's great that you finished up your short story. Having any kind of motivation when it's hot is near impossible. I've been lucky so far with a cooler summer. Stay cool this week and good luck on your latest goals! :)

    1. Thank you! I am happy about that and going to use it to inspire me to keep moving forward with everything else.

  8. I am convinced I have reverse seasonal affective disorder because I stay inside so much during the summer. Heat does not work well for me, I'm too Finnish, lol. Love your excerpt, very voicey! :) Good luck with your goals this week.

    1. We could be twins then. Everyone is always talking about being outside in the summer and I look at them like they just said they like to chew broken glass for fun. Then when it's cold out I would much rather be outside and enjoying the chill.

  9. Maybe you could go and do some writing at a local library or coffee shop? I tend to hide in those places when the thermometer starts evoking cursewords from me. A good shop will let you hang out for hours just getting refills of your tea/coffee... (though 65 is a bit cold even for me).

And when you do... bask in the warm glow of all the things you DID accomplish. You did great.

    1. Haha yeah well I think I like it so low because my most comfy clothes are a tank top and some lounge pants that fit perfect for lazy days but they are pants so...

  10. It's so hard to concentrate when the weather's hot! Hopefully this week will be more productive. I loved the DARKEST MINDS trilogy!

    1. I'm so close to finishing it. The only thing holding me back is a million other things lol. I hope to finish it this week and start Never Fade with my friend. She's not finished with book 1 yet either but she did get sick so that took most of her time lol

  11. The heat can be so draining, don't blame you for staying in. You did great on your goals! Hope you get to finish Darkest Minds, it really is a great series.

    1. I will finish. I plan to spend the rest of my work shift (still have about 9 hours left at this moment) working on my short editing then reading that book!

  12. Yeah, the heat has been kind of a pain for me too. It's really hard to motivate when your brain is melting. You still managed to get a lot done though. Good luck this week!

  13. Ooooh very curious about what happened to your MC that getting in the car with a possible serial killer would "round out her night". Seriously, this hotter than Hades weather is ridiculous! I usually like the warmer weather, but this summer heat is awful! I hope you can get some chill out time this week and finish your book! I hope you have a cool week ;)
